Golden Vibes 2 is the second homemade compilation from the Old is Gold (OiG) crew, a group of Goa trance fans keen on preserving the spirit and energy of classic Goa trance. The scope of this release is impressive, collecting nearly three hours of music spread across two virtual discs. The Wonderboy has compiled material in a variety of old school styles from a respectable list of promising new artists as well as established veterans. Filteria, Jikooha, The Muses Rapt, Ka-Sol, and SynSUN already have many commercial releases on the market, while Subra, Vox, Goasia, and AFGIN have been gaining ground with listeners online. This is a sure bet for any old school fans out there; Golden Vibes 2 promises to be one of the biggest free releases yet!

MP3 Download | Permalink · Download count: 7,961.

OiG take pride in their amateur approach; none of these tracks have been properly mastered, and they seem to prefer it that way. This is not likely to concern most old school listeners, many of whom value creative content far more than production value. Golden Vibes 2 is available in VBR MP3; there is no lossless version available. Subra (Michael Anenburg) has made his track available in lossless FLAC format on his website at least. If you’ve enjoyed this release, be sure to catch the first in the series, also available from Ektoplazm: Golden Vibes 1.

Psychedelic Flashback: Tarsis - The Snake

Article | October 2, 2007 | Updated: October 12, 2008 | Posted by Basilisk

Sebastian Krüger (SBK) and Linus Wessel began working together in the mid-nineties as part of the group Digital Sun. Their first substantial success came with the release of the tribal-influenced Goa trance album The Spiral Of Power on Polytox Records in 1997. That same year, Wessel and Krüger founded Tarsis to explore a “progressive” approach to trance music, emphasizing slow-building arrangements and cutting edge production techniques. After signing with DJ Antaro’s Spirit Zone Records in Germany, Tarsis debuted on the Tathata II compilation with the original version of Atomic Children. Instead of merely elaborating on the melodic exuberance of the Digital Sun project, Tarsis challenged listeners with sleek, stylized grooves and subtle hypnotic effects. This paved the way for Vacuum (1998), the first of several full-length albums from Tarsis.

Vacuum represents a pivotal moment in trance history. In many ways, this deeply progressive Goa trance album can be considered an important forerunner to the rise of the minimal movement that swept across Europe in 1999. Melodies are few and far between—instead, Tarsis focuses on intricate rhythmic programming, the mesmerizing interplay of atmospheric themes, and the evocation of a sublime cosmic feeling. Rather than assault the listener with a frantic barrage of screaming leads (as many contemporary Goa trance producers had been doing with ever-increasing complexity), Tarsis emphasizes the importance of the space between the notes.

Nowhere is this refined approach more clearly heard than on the hauntingly beautiful opening song, The Snake. Vividly capturing the emptiness of the starry void, The Snake substantiates the outer space motifs at the heart of Vacuum, providing form and substance to the deeper artistic aims of the Tarsis project. Underscoring its importance, The Snake was selected by Sebastian Krüger himself for Nova-Tekk’s Eternity Vol. 2, an all-time “best of” compilation. German producers are often overshadowed by X-Dream, one of the most consistently influential groups in trance history, but Tarsis should not go unrecognized for their contribution to the development of progressive and minimal psychedelic trance in the late nineties.

Listen to The Snake (Flash required):

This is the first in a series of articles designed to profile the songs that shaped psychedelic trance history. More of the underlying structure of the project will be revealed in future postings. Please note that the streaming MP3 is provided with permission from the artist. Stay tuned for more!

EBM Party 10 + Ektoplazm Back Room

Event | Toronto | October 20, 2007

EBM Party 10

Saturday October 20, 2007
EBM PARTY 10
Funhaus – 526 Queen St W.
10pm-4am 19+ event
**NO COVER**

Mainroom: DJ Lazarus (lots of EBM, that is why it is called EBM Party, duh!)
Backroom: Laf-O (LIVE), The Nexus7 (LIVE), DJ Basilisk, DJ Echo Void

All right, that’s the official word… since I’m hosting the back room, I should mention a little bit more about what the plan is… and perhaps warn you that the music is probably going to be very hard and intense in the depths of night! I’ve gone out of my way to put together a different sort of line-up, placing the focus on homegrown live acts who will be sharing their own original music. Laf-O is well known in the breakcore scene, having travelled around the world to bring his manic energy to foreign climes. Expect an eclectic and surprising performance that will shock your system to the core. The Nexus7 is a fresh act rising from the underground featuring a tight blend of trance styles, both hard and psychedelic. Also appearing will be DJ Echo Void, opening up the room with some dark and deadly beats. I will be closing the room with a diverse mix of psychedelic sounds… exactly what that consists of will depend entirely on how the room is holding together at that point :) I hope to see some fresh faces out at this free event!

In addition to the musical programme, Sara Jay will be exhibiting some of her recent artwork under the UV rays. Check out her DeviantArt gallery for a peek of what you’re in store for.

Coming? Mark your attendance on Facebook or drop off a comment here… see you on Saturday!
