PERFECT STRANGER
LIVE + DJ Set (Iboga Records, Israel)

http://www.myspace.com/perfectblt

Perfect Stranger is Yuli Fershtat, born 1970 also well known under the guise of BLT. The project “Perfect Stranger” presents a progressive dance music approach, with a comfortable pace, keeping it highly psychedelic, techy, atmospheric and challenging. Perfect Stranger’s fat and deep sound is designed to fit outside venues as much as to kick ass in a club surroundings. Yuli’s Live sets as his DJ sets are of a very high hypnotic value, and if you it gets you from the beginning, there is a big chance you won’t leave the dance floor till it has finished… so keep that bladder empty beforehand!!!

Aerodrömme
Live (Tribal Vision/Blue Tunes, Toronto)

Aerodrömme, a vibrant fresh Canadian act, was created by Boris “Shankar” Kurtzman and Steve Chan. The two members share strong passion for music. Steve Chan comes from a Hard-Trance/Full On Psy world, with his established project Nexus 7; while Boris Shankar arrives from a Progressive/Techno scene as a successful DJ for Tribal Vision Records. Aerodrömme’s sound can be described as a blend of progressive house and techno, with elements of progressive trance and electro. Prepare for some dancefloor killers from these guys.

Tsunami

Compilation Review | February 10, 2009 | Posted by Basilisk

Tsunami
01 :: Zorba - The Deep (6:26)
02 :: Chakra - Deliverance (5:27)
03 :: I.Zen - Voices (7:45)
04 :: Saiko-Pod - Magnetic Force (7:52)
05 :: Total Eclipse - Psychedelic Terrorist (5:16)
06 :: X-Dream - Aspirin (7:46)
07 :: Oforia - Special Offer (8:28)
08 :: Yahel - Reality (8:27)
09 :: Infected Mushroom - Symphonatic (7:42)
10 :: Morphem - Hypnotone (7:59)

Tsunami is a one-off compilation assembled by Opher AKA India Drop for Kinetic Records, New York City. Although technically one of the first major psytrance releases from a North American label, the music is exclusively European and Israeli. The release was made primarily to advertise the Tsunami organization, then a major event promoter. It includes a range of styles with everything from German techtrance to full-on morning trance from Israel.

The compilation begins with an interesting offering from Zorba, a GMS side project featuring Riktam and Rossi (of Systembusters) in this case. The Deep focuses on tribal progressive rhythms backed by pleasant melodies and light atmospheres. The results are very nice.

Chakra’s Deliverance shares little in common with his predominantly dark and sinister old school offerings. This is much more innocent, almost Scandinavian in its serene austerity. Interesting.

I-Zen is the solo project of Erez Aizen from Infected Mushroom. Voices is a great piece of morning trance; just what one would expect from Infected’s period of peak creative development.

Saiko-Pod teams up with rising stars Logic Bomb on Magnetic Force, an acknowledged dance floor classic of the Y2K era. Who could ever forget those crazy monkey noises? This is a very strong collaborative effort: ultra-psychedelic and highly recognizable.

Total Eclipse rips into experimental drum ‘n bass with Psychedelic Terrorist, a song unparallelled in its frantic energy and breakneck pace. It sounds oddly dated by now but I can’t help but appreciate the madness of it all.

The hollow droning kicks, razor-sharp percussion, eerie crackling atmospheres, and an absolute absence of melodies in X-Dream’s Aspirin make it a little tough to handle at times. It was something fresh and interesting at the time—there were few examples of this kind of extremely hard psychedelic techno on the market. Still, I think X-Dream has better work in this style.

Oforia breaks the zombie spell with Special Offer, a flagrantly melodic song filled with a sense of doe-eyed wonder and irrepressible bliss. The cheese factor is bound to alienate some listeners but I happen to consider this one of Ofer’s great triumphs, particularly of the post-Pigs In Space period. However you may feel about it, this is undeniably original.

I don’t quite know what to say about Yahel’s Reality. I never cared for his style but will admit this piece is more appealing than most songs I’ve heard from him. Still, I wouldn’t rate it highly—this is a bit shrill and inauthentic for my taste.

Infected Mushroom deliver one of their finest works with Symphonatic, a legendary song that has graced dance floors all around the world. I remember nights where everyone at a party would be waiting for it, where the introductory sample (“a man with a bass just walked in…”) would elicit shouts and cheers and all hell would break loose. It hasn’t lost any of its lustre in the intervening years—not in my estimation, anyway.

The compilation comes to a close with Morphem’s Hypnotone, a sublime classic originally released on Kiss The Future 1. Gorgeous, hypnotic, and deeply entrancing—one of my all-time favourites.

Tsunami is a noteworth compilation for several reasons. Not only is the music extraordinary, but it also reached many new listeners by virtue of being the most widely distributed release in North America at the time (and, perhaps, ever). The downside: there isn’t much of a sense of storytelling to the release. It jumps from one style to the next without consideration of any sort of coherent flow. No matter—given the quality of the music this can be overlooked. Tsunami is a wonderful compilation that has held up to repeated listening over the years. Recommended.

The Best Free Psytrance of 2008

Journal | February 9, 2009 | Updated: October 15, 2009 | Posted by Basilisk

2008 was a fantastic year for free music. Now, having had more than a month to reflect, I have compiled a list of personal highlights. I’ll own up to being involved in some of these projects in some capacity or another, but this bias shouldn’t come as a surprise—I wouldn’t be working so closely on some of these projects if I didn’t like the music! Without further ado, here are my picks for the best free psytrance releases of 2008 (in no particular order):

Momentum Vol. 1

Momentum Vol. 1

Momentum Vol. 1: techtrance the way it should be! PhaseTech assembled a great set of tunes for this release, many of which have been heard on Toronto dance floors thanks to DJs like Jarek, Nomolos, and myself. The classy futuristic style is a throwback to the early years of the new millennium—when artists like Midi Miliz and Authentik ruled the night (and Wizzy Noise was still releasing music that people were enthusiastic about). From what I know, the second volume is due to land sometime this spring, so stay tuned for more mechanical mayhem from TesseracTstudio!

Entheos Audio Archive 2.0

Entheos Audio Archive 2.0

Entheos Audio Archive 2.0 is one of the first (mostly) Canadian psytrance compilations in history. Osiris Indriya is from Oregon, but the rest—all Canadian content. Akhentek and Sijay worked on the artwork and mastering while I helped to compile a few tracks and ran the final product to the printers. 1,000 physical CDs were printed up just in time for the main event: the Entheos Summer Solstice Festival. I still have some CDs in case anyone wants one! What do I like about this release? It is the flow that does it for me—it gracefully moves from one style to the next, charting a true journey through psychedelic trance and West Coast downtempo vibes.

IsraTrance Free Compilation 1

IsraTrance Free Compilation 1

IsraTrance is perhaps the largest and most important psytrance community on the planet. Nowhere else will you find such a mix of producers, label owners, and party people of all nationalities. This compilation features a number of artists active on the site—each with their own distinct approach to psytrance. Given that I possess diverse taste in psytrance, it is the sheer variety of styles present on this compilation that really does it for me. NASA, Mubali, Filteria, and Minimal Criminal provide some great beats here. Not to be missed!

Digital Family

Digital Family

Digital Diamonds is a German techno and techtrance netlabel operated by Volker and Adam of Alic. After releasing many great EPs over the course of the previous year, they assembled Digital Family, a deep and dirty psychedelic techno compilation perfectly suited for the cold and misty days of November. It’s been a hit all over, particularly with the “non-psytrance” crowd. I dig it for its sleek, futuristic sound.

Organic Circuitry

Organic Circuitry

I couldn’t leave out the compilation I was instrumental in assembling, could I? Organic Circuitry was years in the making—I began to compile material for it back in early 2006 or so. Back then, free music had zero credibility, so you have to hand it to these artists for being forward-thinking enough to have faith in the concept! I am really happy with how it turned out in the end. No two tracks are alike but they all share emotional and melodic qualities and non-standard approaches.

Ekoplex – Journey Of The Turtle

Ekoplex – Journey Of The Turtle

Neither Ray (Ekoplex) nor myself had any idea how well Journey Of The Turtle would do when we released it this summer. JOTT was the first major release on Ektoplazm—the “test case,” if you will, to see how well a professional-grade artist album might fare. Of course, the response has been absolutely astounding; just check out the comments and reviews! Not only has it been a huge hit online but we even managed to sell close to 200 copies of the physical CD version—with full disclosure, of course. The album itself is a great ride; something fresh and interesting and truly Canadian. Be sure to check it out.

Cybernetika – Nanospheric

Cybernetika – Nanospheric

Nanospheric is an extraordinary concept album by the German producer Cybernetika. I wouldn’t hesitate to call it one of the top albums of the year, free or not! The style is an original fusion of darkpsy, full-on, and old school Goa trance—all wrapped up in heavy science fiction themes. Defying genre standards, most of the songs on the album are extremely long—four of them are between 10 and 15 minutes in length, with not a second wasted. Creatively brilliant and masterfully executed—definitely one of the best free psytrance releases yet.

Jikkenteki – Flights Of Infinity

Jikkenteki – Flights Of Infinity

And so we arrive at Jikkenteki’s massive sophomore effort, Flights Of Infinity. This is what happens when you let a talented producer break all the rules and simply write the music they want to write. The opening track smashes all length records, weighing in with a runtime of more than half an hour—and that is just the beginning! FOI is a dazzling display of creative virtuosity and daring—precisely the sort of thing you won’t find much of in the commercial psytrance industry. Music without limits!

Deep Channeling marks the solo debut of Trebolactiko, an Argentinian project inspired by the likes of Kuba, Ott, and Entheogenic. Released by Hispanodelicius Records, this mini-album is a meditative journey into deep tribal trance with a distinctly South American flavour.
