Mukti – Magick Mother

Free Music | May 25, 2009 | Released by Ektoplazm | Posted by Basilisk

Mukti – Magick Mother
01 :: Magick Mother (145 BPM)
02 :: Awakening (Upon A Star Part 2) (150 BPM)
03 :: Eastern Wind (150 BPM)
04 :: Crossing Rolando's Fissure (152 BPM)
05 :: The Thanaton (152 BPM)

Magick Mother marks the debut of Mukti (Darren Harper), an American psytrance and ambient producer. This five part conceptual release explores the rich symbolism of the mother archetype, challenging the listener with raw psychedelic rhythms and powerful atmospheric effects. Although the style is associated with darkpsy it is better to think of it as twisted forest trance with space rock influences and a slightly lo-fi sensibility–not unlike Para Halu or Psykovsky in some ways. This release has been mastered by Kri at Audio Valve and features artwork by Paul Zulauf.

Physical Media Done Right: Freeform Human’s Arnika Project

Journal | May 20, 2009 | Updated: July 22, 2009 | Posted by Basilisk

freeform-human

Gi’iwa Productions has the right idea with the release of Freeform Human’s debut, Arnika. Most psytrance albums are just a collection of tracks–DJ fodder, in essence. Not this release. The team behind Arnika have taken this “psychofunkadelic” production to the next level. Other labels and artists should pay attention: if you want to actually sell physical media in an underground niche market, well… this is how it is done.

First: the raw facts of the release. Freeform Human is a collaboration between two Australians, one half of Hired Goonz (already known from a smattering of compilation appearances) and Hueman, a visual artist and VJ. Together they have composed a seamless 60 minute voyage into genre-bending psytrance with “elements of electro, breaks, chill, hip-hop, disco and full throttle metal.” Want a taste? Check out the MP3 mega-mix available from the group’s web site or click below to stream it now (Flash required):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In addition to its healthy disregard for stylistic conventions, Arnika is composed almost entirely with analogue gear: a Minimoog, Sherman Filterbank, a “shit old microphone,” and not much else. In a marketplace saturated with pristine digital productions the raw organic sound of this low-tech album is particularly ear-catching.

Freeform Human also cover the charity angle: 10% of the net proceeds from the project will be donated to the protection of Tasmania’s old growth forests via Still Wild Still Threatened and The Wilderness Society. Smart move; this is sure to appeal to the album’s core demographic. Since I expect this release will sell out this also means that a nice chunk of change will be put toward saving the trees.

All of the above would be enough to give Arnika an edge in the dwindling physical media marketplace but there is more. From the band’s web site:

Each album cover is one-of-a-kind hand painted and hand crafted from 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard. The album cover is UV reactive and has been limited to 999 editions.

Very smart. And it is smarter still that the manufacturing process was documented. Here are a few shots of the album artwork in progress:

freeform-human-hands

freeform-human-stack

freeform-human-paint

freeform-human-glue

Doesn’t that make you want to own one? Anyone merely downloading this release is missing out on the experience of the release. My only criticisms: the band’s web site is a bit weak (very “web 1.0″) and it would be nice to see the DJ-friendly digital version available at more than one outlet. These issues are not huge, however. The sheer strength of the concept and presentation should be enough for this album to succeed.

The take-home message for labels and artists is simple: find a way to make your releases special. The market for mass produced copies is shrinking fast but here is still some hope for individualized releases like Arnika, where every “copy” is actually unique in some way. Music fans place high value on experiential qualities; they want to be involved in the narrative unfolding around the music. Freeform Human’s Arnika project demonstrates one way in which physical media can be infused with elements of the experiential.

The Arnika CD is available for purchase from the Freeform Human web site or Saikosounds. DJ-friendly versions of several tracks can be purchased from Mindawn in MP3 or FLAC format. Finally, Damion (of Psyreviews fame) has conducted an interview with Freeform Human for Chaishop.

Update: Psyreviews approves.

Entheos 2009

Event | June 9, 2009 | Posted by Basilisk

entheos3flyerweb

ENTHEOS MUSIC FESTIVAL AND CONFERENCE 09

The Entheos Conference and Festival takes place in a beautiful outdoor location near Squamish, B.C. from June 19-21st, 2009.

Entheos is a next-generation outdoor festival created by a loving crew of enthusiastic volunteers that celebrates our collective creativity, inter connectivity, and innate divinity at the time of the Summer Solstice.

A wide variety of electronic music ranging from trance to dubstep and from mellow grooves to ambient soundscapes is presented on two stages.

Entheos also features a conference, workshops, a kids zone, a Red Tent for women, a tea lounge, a temple and a tribal marketplace. A green team of environmental engineers works to ensure that we gather with minimal impact, fostering environmental responsibility and ongoing sustainability.

The mission of the Entheos Conference and Festival is to inspire self-expression, energetic elevation, meaningful fun, new friendships, and optimism for the future.

Entheos 09 Conference

Entheos provides Workshops and a Conference for attendees to develop new skills and have time to commune with their brothers and sisters in a positive environment. This year we have some very special knowledge to impart, and as we gather in one of British Columbias most sacred valleys, we look forward to sharing them with you. Our keynote speaker this year is Jeet-kei Leung, who will be leading a 2 hour seminar entitled: The New Festival & Transformational Culture:

The Festival has been a consistent and vital part of human culture since our beginnings. They have been a call to step outside of everyday life, to connect with the mythic and celebrate communally the affirmation of life. Now, after centuries of puritanism and repression, the ecstatic tradition has re-emerged into culture at a pivotal time of global challenges and enormous shifts. A new festival culture has bloomed throughout the west coast and dotting the world.

The new festivals have become confluence points for exchange and inspiration, community-building and collaboration, a place where the cutting-edge memes and thought of our time find a meeting ground to inform and inspire each other. These parties have become a practice space for the intentionally co-created world–the TAZ or temporary autonomous zone, a model of the future coming into being.

The New Festival & Transformational Culture articulates exactly how this culture embodies the way towards an evolved, liberated and promising future. Jeet-kei Leung aka Mazeguider shares insights from involvement with the culture since its origins and opens the doorways to understanding this vital, new, and yet ancient, phenomena blossoming once again in our midst.

An Essential Quality of Music

Quotation | May 19, 2009 | Posted by Basilisk

“The activity of making and listening to music involves in something that is never merely personal. In this sense, music is like a language; when we ‘speak’ or ‘listen’ in musical language, we participate in a signifying system that is communally shared and defined, something that is larger than our own use of it and that we enter whenever we involve ourselves with music.

The problem of making judgments about music is rooted here. Its collective, communal aspect suggests that its significance exceeds our purely individual responses, but at the same time we tend to experience music as significant in intensely personal and subjective ways. This seems to be an essential quality of music: it is collectively significant but speaks to the individual in a manner inaccessible to rational argument and dispute.”

Julian Johnson, Who Needs Classical Music? Cultural Choice and Musical Value, 2002
