Vintage Channel 4 News Report on Goa Trance

Youtube users have been incredibly resourceful in unearthing video content previously unavailable to anyone interested in the history of trance. The following clip, dated late 1996, is a brief Channel 4 (UK) news report detailing the emergence of the Goa trance phenomenon into the public sphere of awareness. Since this is British programming, the emphasis is on Dragonfly, TIP, Flying Rhino, and Return To The Source, with soundbites from trance pioneers Simon Posford, Youth, James Monro, Chris Deckker, and Raja Ram. Beware the “nostalgic” graphics!
Despite the age of this clip (now more than a decade old), it still serves as a reasonably well-articulated primer on what distinguishes the Goa trance movement from the rest of electronic dance music culture. By its very nature, the report provides an outsider’s perspective—one which would not necessarily match that of someone within the movement, then or now—but I think it manages to strike fairly close to the mark, for its time. It is interesting to reflect upon all that has changed over the years since those early days, and also to consider what elements of psychedelic trance culture have remained relatively unaltered over the years.
Thanks go out to Chechko for the find.

Ah, the good old days. :) Thanks for the nostalgic injection!
its ok!
Wow, I just noticed this – what a nostalgia trip! I listen to current psy and progressive all the time and love it, but I was weaned on early goa trance labels like Flying Rhino and Dragonfly and T.I.P (still have some old vinyl too) and I can remember how exciting it was to be witnessing the birth of a wicked new musical form. It would always be a treat to walk into the record store and catch sight of a new release from one of those labels – for the longest time it seemed they could do no wrong! Funny to see young Mr. Posford at a whopping 23, and just dig James Monroe’s funky hairstyle…
lol! simon is young :D
“Wobbling like a jelly on a plate”….go Raja Ram! I also remember this time…before the conventions became well established, and while every group of people had their own unique twist on it. There can be no doubt that partying in a jungle in India is gonna have a far different effect on your whole system, than going to a club. The second/third/fourth gen. inevitably are referencing the initial Wow…but all you gotta do is go to the woods, low key with no big $500,000 truss rig and take the time to create your own art…Oh yeah, and find your own warm innocence in a world so good at being ‘cool’.
