Akara is named after the Indonesian words “akar”, meaning root or vine, and “acara”, meaning ritual or performance. Akara is a symphony for the post-digital age, a mystical, ritual music, the songs of luminous extra-dimensional beings with melodies and words at once new and familiar, a strange and beautiful dream, a dance-floor journey into another world, The World Beyond. Independent of dance music trends without being unaware of them, Akara combines fragments of Baroque and Medieval music, 20th century minimalism, Indian classical, and gamelan with psy dub, glitch-hop, dubstep, and downtempo grooves. Akara is created and curated by Joshua Penman, an award-winning composer, working closely with a small classical orchestra of top-notch players (full credits for this album are available on Bandcamp). Released by Merkaba Music; recorded by Joshua Penman, Zavosh Rad, and Scott McDowell; mixed by Eric Peterson and Joshua Penman; mastered by Kevin Metcalfe; cover art by Andrew Gonzalez with additional graphics by Mugwort Artemesia.

Wow, Akara! That is a treat!

Beautiful, high quality music with a wonderfully creative use of instruments and varied style, all with the ethereal near-words flowing through. Medieval astral-glitch infused baroquetronica with a psychedelic edge.

  • Caroline says:

In my opinion, this is amazing! I have been doing yoga and free flow dance every morning for a few weeks to it, and if you let yourself be taken away with it, it is definitely psychedelic! Totally blows me away every time I listen to it…most respect to the use of classical instruments and long sweeps I love classical as I played for many years in orchestras…that doesn’t stop me loving anything psy to dance to – it adds to the beautifully rich tones throughout this album. Thank you SO much ! Highly intelligent music 12/10!

  • PsyloCyBee says:

  • D427ZI says:

For me the Akara music, sounds more like late 90’s new-age music style, reminds me of Aereda; Diane Arkenstone; Adiemus. Anyway 5tars for track 6 and thank you!

  • Rahul Hanummanmal Jhabak says:

Simply great! Man you really need to download this shit for sure.

  • nymphomania says:

This is kind of over-dramatic, cheesy and perhaps nothing like other Ektoplazm/psychedelic music, but I find it to be good in its own way. The melodies are complex and interesting. It is like some kind of classically influenced ethereal trip hop.

  • Rayven Spirit says:

I cannot love this enough! I’ve been listening to it on and off for months now. It takes me to places that are out of this world yet deeply and intimately human. I am moved to tears and at at the same time my soul soars with the stars. Thank you for sharing this treasure of creative expression.
