Kurbeats AKA Yggdrasil (Andreas Lingbrand and Mathias Eriksson) and Event Horizon present Folktronica, the mutant child of Scandinavian folk music and electronica. With this release the duo continues the story that began with Prose Edda, Yggdrasil’s debut album, only this is the true beginning—giving you what Prose Edda merely hinted at. This album sets out to discover a new path, blending acoustic instruments and joik (a traditional Sami style of song) captured in the Kurbeats studio with digitally rendered soundscapes created by Andreas and Mathias. Backed by Scandinavian tradition and with their roots deep within the electronic music scene this album, Kurbeats takes you on a journey from a shaman’s tent through the cosmos and back into the heart. Hold on to your seats, here we go!

  • soma_junkie says:

This a brilliant album. Definite contender for my favorite downtempo release from Ektoplazm this year. My favorite track is Lemming Leisures. But the whole thing is wonderful, and a great experience. For those who compared it to Shpongle, it’s not a bad comparison, though it more reminds me of the old Celtic Cross stuff, but I think actually this is better, for my tastes at least.

  • decihex says:

I like the way this creeps up on you and takes you away to your special ambient place.

Pure ethnic Saami music + Shpongle imitation = Kurbeats. Should’ve stopped after the 1st track.

  • iridium says:

  • Nymphomania says:

You know, to my ears this is similar to but actually better than Shpongle, because for Shpongle the ‘world music’ angle was always a novelty, or a gimmick, or something they did to see if they could, to try and unify cultures… but here the ‘folk’ is the real thing, there is real substance and melody and there is no dividing line between these sounds and the electronics. It’s a perfect fusion and there is no cheese to be found anywhere. It’s gorgeous, emotionally deep music and I cannot stop listening to it. 5/5

  • end user says:

Wow this is an awesome album.

  • disprosio says:

theory of destructive electronic beats molecules into a new brand sounds!!

  • David Beer says:

Thank you so much a for a pleasssssurable journey and a wonderful new perspective!

  • Jonas says:

Wow, this really captures the emotional depth (the seriousness, sadness, bitter-sweetness to my subjective mind) of the folk music, and takes it into whole other dimension together with the electronic/tribal genre. Here, besides other things, I hear the electronic genre giving the atmosphere to let the folk music “live” within.

This is done with real respect to both genres of music. I have heard folk-music mixed into modern genres before, but usually it doesn’t become symbiotic. In this album the both genres actually add to each other, opening another dimension.

  • Ranjan says:

mind blowing …i am addicted to this original art music

  • Mrs.Krobb says:

Kurbeats have been clearly a lot inspired of Shpongle and even Hallucinogen, Kurbeats may even not exist without their music which was already a success in their time and still now. You may love one without loving the other but let’s put things in their right place. Anyway, I love the three of them for different reasons, nice discover here.

  • Julian says:

I discovered this album a few days ago, it sounds really good, I love how each instrumental sounds, they are very well produced and mastered.
