Microcosm was an old school Goa trance project formed by Norwegian musicians Fredrik Larsen and Georg Simonsen in the late 1990s. Their debut album, Higher Levels, was never meant to be released, but thanks to the efforts of a close friend, it is now possible to experience the wondrous majesty of these lost classics. Microcosm’s sound embraces the original conception of “full-on”, combining layered melodies, acid-drenched, cosmic atmospheres, and peak-time energy. Behind the music, there is also a cautionary tale of dreams, obsession, and excess, all in the pursuit of accessing the higher levels of trance for which this album is named. Engineered by Karlsen and mastered by Jay (Southwild) @ Trailer Park Studios, Toronto.

  • spork says:

This is a true gem; it’s as simple as that. Is there any more detailed info on this project? What does “late nineties” mean, for instance? And why on earth was it never intended to be released? I don’t know why, but there’s just something about this that sounds so much more genuine than neo Goa; I had the same experience with the recent “Mind Rewind” release: a trip through time. I absolutely adore this album. =D

  • andre nautoy says:

First of all it’s wrong that this wasn’t meant for official release, it’s just Fredrik who had a strong view of what label he wanted it to be released on. He dreamt of 3D Vision but also claimed he sent the material to Spirit Zone amongst others. Fredrik was a drug addict and the drugs is probably the reason why his music almost ended up in the grave with him.

Most of these tracks were written 97-99
I got to know Fredrik from 99 until his death. I miss him and hope he found his peace finally..

  • DigitalStorm says:

    andre nautoy,
thanks for the info about the musician.
I very sad to hear that man
no longer alive. I was looking for it in the network is not
knowing it. sorry I could not tell him
Thank you for such a treasure.

  • RoDMINUS- says:

  • JTT says:

It’s now some two months since this came out, 5000 downloads, most incredible. It made it all worthwhile. It IS a brilliant release, but I would say that anyways, wouldn’t I?

The music was created from 1993 towards 2000, there were some later attempts, but it did not work out. The base of the music started as early as 1985. Fred did try to get the music out, we sending mails and letters to most of the labels out there, but no reaction. No one ever did answer. This is why it states “was never meant to be released”.

It was not a matter of a strong personal taste for a label, more like, it hit the wrong side of a wave. As the times changed, full on Goa become history. Like it us for us now, a small handful of people who feel it(thank god?).

I am very happy it finally got out there, for us few all, now. If you like this very small genre, I hope you see the brilliance going into this.A thousand trips indeed, paying the personal price every single step of the way

  • Dimitri says:

Am I the only one who’s been around long enough to remember the compilation put out by members of the 604 mailing list in 1997? It was called “Unknown Object in 604”. Ultraphoric Spacevibes and Eternal Circle were both on it. EC also happened to be IMO the best track on that comp.

  • amunan says:

Thanx to Jørgen and Georg for taking their time to get this out. Now at over 11000 downloads! I am very sure Fred would be proud of this. This is way too good to just be forgotten, and it’s a great memory of Fred, who died the day after we sat here , listening to Shakta.
