Spruce – Mru

Free Music | Downtempo, IDM, Swamp | January 2, 2015 | Released by  | Posted by Basilisk

Spruce – Mru
01 - Urdla (123 BPM)
02 - Kreolske Kreoder (87 BPM)
03 - Nordani (119 BPM)
04 - Gdmydas Flukt (87/94.5 BPM)
05 - Melkh Al-Khéfir (109 BPM)
06 - Naerul Vuyezh (177 BPM)
07 - Syadastinastiavaktavyah (128 BPM)

Spruce is back again! This time he tries a more moderato approach to music, drastically lowering the BPMs, though with occasional resurgences to presto. Mru is an old, half-melted VHS cassette recovered from an unknown, ancient civilization. Drawing upon a mysterious age of myths, demons, heroes, fools, cats, horses, and probably aliens too, these technicolor tales of absurdity detail the obscure dreams, arcane secrets, and exquisite adventures of these lost people. Come, join us on this bizarre journey!

David Falao Gjølstad, or more commonly known as Spruce, is a musically gifted Norwegian with a clearly innovative, clearly beautiful taste for the intense world of psychedelic music. For the past three years, he has been releasing mind-blowing epics in the form of game-changer sound productions, typically being over 3 hours long. His fourth album, MRU, is the first to be what he describes as a “EP”, even though most of us would consider an hour long adventure a full “Album”. MRU, along with his other productions, offers a glance into the unexplored regions of psychedelic music, creating a truly remarkable experience for any musical connoisseur. Just when you thought you’ve heard it all, Spruce manages to create sounds quite literally never heard before.

MRU contains waves of Spruces signature sound, arpeggiating brain-melting synths deep in the distance, matched with samples of classical orchestrations and dark soundscapes. His world of bongos, moogs, and modulating pitch-changing abstractions will suck you right up into another dimension and spit you back out startled and amazed. Innovative to the extreme, it is nearly impossible to know what to expect next, and at times it will be equally as impossible to define just what the hell is going on. That being said, it’s strangely addicting, and anyone with an open mind will be rewarded with one of the most fantastic albums 2014 has to offer.

How do I describe these sounds? You are better off forming your own interpretation of these magical forms, but I personally feel Spruce has managed to combine a bit of drunken Jazz with deep house Breakbeats, took them out to the club for an incredibly sexual adventure, and this all resulted in a extraordinary funky, engulfing, all-knowing musical entity being born. “…what?” you may ask yourself. Well, you see, this is why you just have to listen.

MRU is a truly impressive addition to Spruces already legendary collection of interesting ear-candy. I have been following his works since day one, and I am incredibly lucky to have discovered such a gem in todays world of clustered, repetitive Pop music. Spruce shows us there is always hope in the world of sound. I personally believe MRU is a refreshing listen and anybody with a taste for difference should dive in head first immediately.

Super cool sound here Spruce! Inspiring

  • Random Dude says:

Everytime Spruce releases a new EP I am reallly excited for it. At the same time, I already know that my mind won’t be ready to understand his music. And that’s what it makes it impressive!
How often can one say that his mind isn’t ready to hear these sounds? Not ready to feel the story behind all of this. As soon as the sound reaches my ears I feel like I am on a journey, a journey with no beginning and no end. Never ending.
I would say more, but FatKidWitaJetPak already described it perfectly.

Keep up the good work Spruce, your a master of experimental sounds, creating your own style over and over again with every single track you produce! At least this is what I feel when I listen to this and all of your other stuff! Peace !

  • voxel.blue says:

This is one of the most extreme albums I have heard for quite some time. It is absolutely unique in it’s style.
For me, it sounds funny, strange, harmonic and dis-harmonic, totally mixed up, everything at the same time and yet I had constantly the thought in my head: it’s unplayable. I usually have a picture in my head where the sound I’m listening to is the perfect soundtrack, this one is hard – in a good way.
