Note: the following text is adapted from an old write-up found on the web that is no longer live. It does not cover DJ Dam’s more recent activities in as much depth.
DJ Dam’s first psychedelic trance experiences were while working in the UK in the early nineties. He often attended the infamous Return to the Source and Escape From Samsara parties at The Fridge in Brixton. Between 1994 and 1999 he explored many of London’s underground clubs and parties. He also started buying psychedelic records and began learning the art of DJ mixing.
Since then, Dam has played and attended parties in the UK, the US, Canada, Thailand, Spain, Japan, the Netherlands, Croatia and Germany. His interests run the gamut from the happy hardcore and techno parties staged by free party crews like Exodus and Spiral Tribe to the infamous full moon psychedelic trance parties at Hat Rin beach on Kho Pha-Ngang, Thailand.
Dam held a weekly psytrance residency at Toronto’s legendary Area 51 (R.I.P.) for four years beginning in 1998. And he was a resident at the monthly cyber-trance R351570R (R.I.P.) parties from August 2002 to January 2004. He has regularly played at the monthly Darkrave parties as well as one-off events organized by Toronto psytrance crews including the Black Light Activists, Eloko, Ektoplazm and Lakura. DJ Dam has also played several large festivals including WEMF, Om, and the Omnifestival (in upstate New York).
Dam was part of The Moonshadow Collective (R.I.P.), which organized free outdoor psychedelic beach parties and staged events featuring local and international psytrance DJs. He continued as one of the founding members of Deep Sea Fish (also R.I.P.) which organized some of the best psychedelic trance parties in Toronto throughout the first half of the noughties. Deep Sea Fish brought some of the biggest names in psychedelic trance to Toronto including D-Tek, Juno Reactor, Noma, Synchro, Son Kite and Infected Mushroom. Moonshadow Collective and Deep Sea Fish were also responsible for organizing the global EarthDance party in Toronto for several years.
Dam also hosted an on-line psytrance show, Psykiks, broadcast on 1groove.com from October 1999 thru Feb 2001.
Dam is a very versatile psytrance DJ and his sets often move fluidly through all genres of psychedelic music, including Goa trance, psychedelic trance, techtrance, and “neo” full-on. In recent years Dam has also been known to throw down tripped out ambient sets and has played with one of Toronto’s best chill out crews—the Psyence Project.
