This set was a BLAST to play… it feels like I don’t stray toward the full-on end of things very often, but when I do… well, I just hope that they could all be this good :) the crowd response was phenomenal, and I was constantly building, breaking, and building again… all the way from dark and stormy straight through to the more uplifting side of modern psytrance—in two hours I managed to cover it all!

I played this one at an old school house just outside of the city. This gig was another conversion mission; I was playing psytrance for a crowd of ravers, a task that necessitates accessibility and a keen awareness of dance floor response. In this context, melody is key. For example, when I played NRS the crowd simply wasn’t finding enough to sink into. Yet if I were to play a similar set of material for the psytrance crowd I suspect most listeners would find the material far too overt and even cheesy in parts. It all goes back to one of the central tenets of good DJing: know your audience (as much as possible).

06/06/10 :: Magikal Intentions Set
Magikal Intentions was the first major event from Metamystix, an organization I co-founded along with some new friends back in the early part of 2006. We conceptualized a themed night with an intentional storyline to guide the flow of the evening. The concept, although elaborate in detail, could be expressed as a convergence of sound, light, visuals, and theatrical elements. For that reason, each DJ was chosen with great care to provide a particular sound that would flow nicely into the next act. A few days prior to the event, one of our DJs canceled on us due for unfortunate reasons. Given the thematic nature of this event, I couldn’t simply tag someone else to replace him—I knew I had to do the job myself. With only a day or two to prepare for the early part of the story arc, I got to work, cooking up what I feel was a smooth introduction to the darker material played in the heart of the night. The set begins at midnight with a slightly modified version of The Messenger, which was one of our “key” tracks used to advance the storyline of the evening. Following that, the object was to pick up the speed while gradually darkening the mood and raising the power. The bubble break marks the point at which we let the bubble machine rip all over the crowd. If you’re familiar with the same in the beginning of that Derango tune, it will make perfect sense! This is where my actual set was scheduled to start. The mission of this second half was to bring it out of the goblin forest, through the murky swamp, and into clean melodic territory. It was a setup for the next DJ, who was playing full-on of a more upbeat nature. In terms of flow, I was very happy with the set. I even did a few tricks just for the hell of it, like mixing into Penta then out into Scorb and back for the second half. What a blur!

06/05/13 :: Fire Ceremony
Two friends of mine decided to get married in an elaborate series of elemental ceremonies. I was asked to come play a set with a theme of fiery passion and love. While sifting through my collection I discovered that very little psytrance really qualifies, in my opinion. The bulk of it was within the progressive domain, so I remained there for much of the set. The Ott remix of Shpongle may seem out of place, but this was by design—and the couple went up and danced while most people took a breather. There was a whole lot of noise and people absolutely loved it! Afterwards, a touch of full-on to get one last stomp on, and a slow lead-out with the modern remix of Reload (an old favourite in this circle of people).
