05/08/27 :: Q+A @ Cherry Beach

I don’t believe I have ever received such an enthusiastic reaction to any set I have played over the years. The reason is simple: this event was a genuine rave down at the beach, and few had ever heard psychedelic trance before. So many people came up to me afterwards and asked “what the hell kind of music were you playing?!” Oh I made converts that night… It was dark out when I began—about 4 if I recall—but the sky lightened considerably by the time I dropped Overload. I knew I had to keep it fast—progressive tends to bore crowds like these—but I still wanted to take them on a journey, moving from darkness into pure power and out through melodic morning full-on. I threw in a few familiar tunes like Dune and the KLF remix to get them into it, and the final song was a joke (you’ll know if you’ve heard it). They loved it!

05/06/10 :: Essence – Tribal Forest Set

Over one year in the making, this set was a dream. Some friends of mine had attempted to hold this same event—with me playing a three hour tour of “ten years of tribal trance”–in June of 2004, but the cops busted it up. Resolute, they managed to make it happen in a beautiful forest glade up in Rouge Valley one year later. Preceding me was a tribal drum circle, which gave me the luxury of beginning with downtempo and chilly psychedelic beats. In the “intermission” a bunch of cops showed up, we killed the music, and, well—you had to be there. The dialogue that ensued was something magical. The cops were swayed by the general enthusiasm and good attitude of the crowd, and let the show go on. I started it back up with the very long tribal intro on Divided Life to extend the sense of anticipation, and then it was one straight climb to the full-on peaks and down into morning with some beautiful old school classics. How many DJs still play SFX these days? This three hour marathon would rate amongst my best DJing experiences if it weren’t for the poor behavior of a certain well-known DJ, but that’s another story…

Easily one of my favourite sets played at Darkrave, even with the total cheese at the end. I played at peak time in the main room and the place nearly flew apart in a frenzy of dancing. Good times!
