03/11/01 :: Trick or Tekno 1

This event was held up on Kimbercote farm on a cold and rainy night. FreeSpace had put up the yurt in a field, but the weather was really testing us that night. Pounding sheets of rain smashed against the canvas surface for hours on end as the party peaked, drenched revellers dancing in muddy puddles. The DJ setup was not faring any better—situated at the periphery, water was pooling by the gallon in thick pockets over the equipment. The Technics 1200s were totally out of commission, and I hadn’t yet bought myself a pair of CD decks, but I made do with what was on hand—an old top-loading set of Pioneers that predate even the 100s. Luckily I had a small binder of CDs with me (including some promos), so I was able to make it happen.

This was an opening set played at the space above Metropolis back when it was open. One of the BLA DJs came on after, so I attempted to tone it down at the very end. This would have been (one of?) the very last sets I ever played strictly on vinyl.

I still think back to this set and say “wow!” I put so much work into composing this set, carefully choosing what records to bring out to the venue. Space Tribe was supposed to have been headlining that night, but he was held up at the border. I still played the same opening set, so there weren’t so many people around, but that didn’t really trouble me. With this set I feel as if I made a major step forward in my abilities to stick to a theme and express a storyline.

03/07/04 :: Source of Light Festival

This was by far the worst festival in the history of the universe. Blame DJ Asaph for this atrocity (and the bastard never paid any of us). Everything that could have went wrong went wrong. I ended up playing my “morning” set seven hours later, sometime after noon, to a field of tents littered with garbage and toppled deco. The place was a total ruin. We all left just as it was about to piss rain on everyone Saturday night. It was a terrible experience (and I didn’t even mention the 12 hour drive) but I can at least say I was very pleased with my set.

Until I attended the Eclipse Festival in Quebec, this was the loudest outdoor event I had ever been to—and it was held behind the Ontario Science Center! I was on just after midnight, and this set of dark and alien tunes literally liquidated the grass into brown slurry. Insane.

03/05/03 :: FreeSpace – End of the World Yurt Party!

You have to hand it to FreeSpace—they threw some of the most daring events this city has ever seen. This one was held beneath the Bloor viaduct in a giant tent: the FreeSpace yurt! I kept to the theme and played a great set, even as I was hassled by lanky goons to “play some fucking jungle!” There weren’t too many people around, but I really enjoyed putting this one together. I even threw a few tracks from CD into the mix (possibly the first time I had done so). Up until around now, every set I played was exclusively on vinyl, but that was not to last…

I cannot for the life of me remember anything about playing this set. Was it one of those nights? I think Satori may have been playing as well, and he would have been throwing down some good old classics (I still remember him playing Angelina to finish a set once). Looking back, it’s a bit bizarre that I was regularly playing this music in 2003 considering much of it was already eight years old, but hey, I was dedicated.

03/03/22 :: Ektoplazm – Midnight Sun

This was the last major event I organized in Toronto up until joining with the Metamystix crew. I ended up bargaining with the owner for some extra time which led to it being my longest set yet. I played many songs which became “signature” tracks in the early phase of my DJing career: My Plan, Astral Warrior, and Shape The Future. It was a good moment when I dropped Liquid Neon Sky to end the night… the party was a real success, which made all the heartache involved in this production feel worthwhile.
