1998 marks the last year of the golden age of Goa trance and the beginning of a period of great uncertainty. Many producers, tired of the classic sound, began to experiment with new approaches. Some of these, like the short-lived psybreaks phase championed by Metal Spark and 21:3’s Elastic, never amounted to much of anything. Others, however, had a huge impact on the development of the movement. Chief among them was X-Dream’s monumental album Radio, which pioneered a new minimal aesthetic that soon spread across the world. Likewise, Simon Posford’s psychedelic downtempo project Shpongle scored a massive (and often imitated) hit with Are You Shpongled?

One liitle thing: Cosmic Waves was released in 1999, albeit in January.
I enjoyed most of these albums, esp. California sunshine,
I’m not an old school fan thou, i’m used to guys like tegma and electrypnose.
It’s good music, melodic with a sense for great hard work.
there is 2 version of cosmic wave, on two distinct labels and names, one of them has been released on 1998, the other one is much later, both got the same contents.
I would like to throw a vote out there for a few additions.
Take them for what they are worth.
How about…
Battle of the Future Buddhas – Twin Sharkfins
Cyan – Beast From the East
Digitalis – The Third State
all exceptional 98 releases I could consider essential
my ¢.02
cheers
Another fantastic record from this vintage is
Sibilant – Proper Filth
Pure psy-dnb bliss (maybe an ancient Atropos relative?)
Anyway – peace.
