B :: Proggy Froggy
One of the very last vinyls from Transient featured two songs from acclaimed Swedish producer Dag Wallin, also known as Human Blue. The release is standard issue, with the usual white and silver sleeve of the time.
Essence is a dreamy drifting tune constructed with a truly progressive approach. Subtle melodic elements gracefully build over a long period of time, sparking memories of sandy beaches and warm afternoons. One could compare this song to a pair of Human Blue classics from this same era: Carpe Diem and Electric Harmony. It is not quite as great as either of those, but it is still very nice.
Proggy Froggy on the flip-side is distinctly different, with a higher BPM and a much more minimal arrangement. The snappy percussion sets the groove while bass lines engage in curious off-balance antics, infusing the song with a sinister character. The friendly melodies of the A-side have been replaced by sneaky flaring tones and small bubbling noises that wriggle around in the twilight glow. This methodology proves to be a success, conjuring a richly psychedelic vibe through nine minutes of steady progression.
This EP shows two contrasting sides of Dag Wallin’s producing prowess—light and clean morning sounds, as well as dark and groovy psychedelic trance. This underrated record is an excellent selection for fans of smooth psychedelic trance and the Scandinavian sound.
