Institut für Bassforschung - Narkotische Früchte

Medium (Midijum Records) 2002 (Vinyl Single)

A :: Narkotische Früchte
B :: Der Grosse Kumpo

Institut für Bassforschung (Institute for Bass Exploration) is a collaboration between DJ Exanimo and Olli Weber. Narkotische Früchte is the very last vinyl single from Medium Records (later renamed to Midijum due to legal troubles). The style is an appealing blend of tribal techtrance and funky progressive.

Narkotische Früchte develops a heavy throbbing groove complimented by slick percussive work and elusive hints of funky guitar. The bridge introduces some German sample work, tribal drumming, and the sound of crickets chirping (a nice organic touch). Sly leads bring it to a boil, and the progression maintains a steady flow. Slick stuff!

Der Grosse Kumpo (released on CD with Vibration 4) is a pumping psytrance anthem loaded with tough tribal drums, German samples, and a touch of crowd noise. The dark and chunky groove is fat as hell, bringing a lot of charm to this production. It remains unwaveringly serious for the duration, sprinkled with small Gothic melodies strangely reminiscent of an old rave classic: Brainbug’s Nightmare. The style of this piece makes it a strong crowd favourite, and one of mine as well. Solid!

This record is easily one of the finest from Medium Records. The plain presentation may make it less collectible than other releases of the time, but the tunes are certainly above average. If you like the tough Germanic style of progressive with a heavy tribal influence, check this out.
