B :: Sound is Solid
Here’s an oldie from way back in 1994! Total Eclipse was one of the earliest groups on the scene making anything we might call Goa trance, and this is the fifth 12″ single from the pioneering label Dragonfly.
Aliens is a classic track which has appeared on no less than ten compilation CDs. The drums sound ancient, but the melodies are beautiful in a harsh electronic way. There is a highly mysterious atmosphere manifested by the interplay of dramatic synth sweeps and small chiming melodies, and the beat is doused in electro-flavoured bleeps and blops. A great sample compliments the theme of the track in key moments: “where do they come from – what do they want?” From this far back you can distinctly hear the EBM and rock influences, which makes it an excellent addition to any historian’s collection.
Sound is Solid, though it features additional remix work by none other than Simon Posford, never appealed to me. It’s messy and dissonant, with some rather aggravating leads that sound subtly off-key. The division between euphoric moments and rough sounds is particularly jarring. It’s not a keeper, though it will have its fans.
Despite the shoddy B-side this record is a great addition to any old school collection. I think I’m out on a limb suggesting this one, but Aliens is a really great example of Goa trance from the formative years, clearly showing earlier influences while undeniably representing the classic style in all its glory. Aliens is also available on a number of compilations including Dragonfly Classix and Order Odonata 1.
