Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning. On May 1st, 2010, Planewalker performed live at the Reed College Renn Fayre, an annual event featuring several stages of music and plenty of unconventional festival activities for students and their guests. This set features all original material and was created using Ableton Live along with a bit of electric guitar near the beginning. Collaborators on the production side include Rain (AKA Phutureprimitive/Telepathik), Mister Chill’R, Celeste Goguen, B-Grade, Osiris Indriya, Chimera, and Sunbyte. Special mention must be made of the opening track, a psytrance remix of a bluegrass song originally written by Michael Martin Murphey, Planewalker’s father, and produced by his brother Rye Murphey.

Manufactured in 1982, Oxya (Joey Dianos) is a time-travelling robot presently stationed in Greece. Operating under the auspices of Adapted Records (Australia), Oxya’s main purpose is to constantly import reality-warping sound artifacts to the present time from the past and future. This particular package contains a field recording of Oxya in action at the 2009 edition of the Aurora Festival in Greece. The sound? Powerful full-on psytrance with an edge!

Xamanist (Sérgio Ribeiro) stepped into the limelight with the release of Initiation, his debut album, on Ektoplazm back in January of 2009. Outside of the studio, Xamanist is a rare example of a genuinely live psytrance act. This live demo was recorded in 2009 and features real guitar improvisation over the music of Initiation. For those who are curious, here is a list of equipment used: Dell Laptop Core2 Duo, Edirol UA-1000 (audio interface), Edirol PCR-A30 (midi keyboard), Sonar 6 LE (sequencer), Fender Stratocaster, Line6 POD (guitar effects).
