Circadian Rhythms is a meditation on the passage of time and an exercise in musical archeology. Mixing live on four decks, DJ Basilisk skillfully blends some of the finest mid-tempo Goa trance classics of the 1990s with dub techno, tribal trance, progressive house, psybreaks, and psychedelic dub. Holding steady at or around 120 beats per minute, the deep frequencies of this mix evoke the heartbeat of creation, taking the listener on a full journey through day into night and back again. This set was recorded live at Re:Generate, the name chosen by the Om Reunion Project to set the mood for their summer solstice gathering in 2011. I was scheduled to play on Sunday morning at the Moon Bass stage, a great little setup in a forest clearing on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Ontario. It felt like the right space and time to take a trip into the history of the psychedelic trance subculture so I mixed up a diverse assortment of old school Goa trance classics after sunrise. As always, this set was completely improvised; absolutely nothing was planned prior to stepping on stage to ready my equipment. This musical experience was co-created with a fantastic crowd of people who emerged from the woods to dance with enthusiasm to these old school gems. Anyer Quantum, a 22 year old DJ from Mexico, is the winner of the Digital Diamonds mix competition. Here you can enjoy a nice selection consisting entirely of music released by Digital Diamonds, an advanced audio netlabel from Germany. Fresh from the release of his excellent third studio album, Polish musician Kino Oko performed live in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in late September 2010. Spanning an hour and a half, this set incorporates material from Lost Entertainment (2006), Alphabetically Divided Highway (2008), and Colours Hate Themselves (2010), as well as a variety of single tracks from compilations and other sources. As expected, the sound showcased here is an original blend of futurist sentiments and retro melancholy expertly expressed through electronic dance music. Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning. Recorded at Ilum Studios, B.C.

On May 1st, 2010, Planewalker performed live at the Reed College Renn Fayre, an annual event featuring several stages of music and plenty of unconventional festival activities for students and their guests. This set features all original material and was created using Ableton Live along with a bit of electric guitar near the beginning. Collaborators on the production side include Rain (AKA Phutureprimitive/Telepathik), Mister Chill’R, Celeste Goguen, B-Grade, Osiris Indriya, Chimera, and Sunbyte. Special mention must be made of the opening track, a psytrance remix of a bluegrass song originally written by Michael Martin Murphey, Planewalker’s father, and produced by his brother Rye Murphey.
