Redshift is the first release from Ethosphere, the alter ego of electronic music producer Ryan Rudman, born in South Africa and now based in London, U.K. This album explores midtempo/downtempo with a strong melodic character heavily influenced by the burgeoning psytrance culture of his home city, Cape Town, yet not restricted to formulaic dance floor tracks. Every track is an uncommon infusion, incorporating influences from rock, metal, breakbeat, glitch, ambient, industrial, dub, and acoustic music, elements of which can be heard interwoven throughout the journey. The first thing to you should know about Itsu (Ben Jancovich) is that he doesn’t much care for genres. Terms like psychedelic, IDM, glitch, drum and bass, dubstep, and ambient are relevant, but not quite adequate to describe his style. Itsu’s lush, underwater soundscapes and ethereal melodies soothe the listener into a false sense of security before exploding into a barrage of distorted granular synthesis, rumbling sub bass and frenetic breakbeats.
