What is "Goa/Psy Trance"?

o.k. so strange thimgs happen in raves , but then maybe they just happen in each ones mind. What i have experienced is a kind of network between the peolpe (a mental network u could say) where many are connected and there is a kind of dialogue goin on without any words being spoken.(usualy on acid when i felt that) Another thing is to whom does all the energy go?? Hundreads of people dance . the kinetik energy they create from their own life ennergies must surely be transformed in an other type of energy. Since the heat levels of the place don't rise i suppose it all goes somewhere or to someone/something . Don't think it goes to each other because we all feel exausted after 10 hours or so of dancing(exaustion-lack of energy).And now the cheesy part: Don't know if anybody here has read some sci fi novels about alien entities suckin the enrgy from whole solar systems and stuff like that (illuminatus i think they were called).They had agents on the planet who helped they energy flow towards the illuminatus and whom they repaid with large amounts of power on the human plane.Well just imagine... Enough with the x-files put on some techno and turn the volume on!!!!

Goa Trance is the mose unique and beautiful music that I've heard in my life. The only cd that I have as of now is the Blue Room Record Release Trip Through Sound featuring artists like Juno Reactor, T.I.P., Tandu, Spectral and many more. As an electronic musician my question is how do you make Goa Trance. I'm always surfing the net trying to find out info on what kind of scales are used in Goa trance, the types of instruments used and what composition theory goes behind it. I think...GOA and Psy-Trance are the most dynamic forms of music in the "electronica" genre. These forms of music have the most intricate rythems and layers. I love it. One dancing and drugs... although the music is well suited to these types of atmoshperes, I listen to it all the time.. at work.. on the subway.. driving. I think that when "regualar" people hear anything with a BPM around 135-145 they assume that it is only for a club or party or whatever, and they don't give it a chance as listening-music. I think that Goa is for those that know what they want and go right to the source. I'm a hippy (started w/ the grateful dead), an electronic music freak, and I regularly listen to ALL forms of music from ABBA to ZAPPA. I consider myself a deeply spiritual and awaken-ing being. I'm new to Goa/Psy trance(1 yr) and to me it's like mainlining the perfect vibe. Raw, uncut energy and inspiration. Music without ego- transcending all thought- now we're in the realm of "being" - no more "doing." As far of drugs go - I have followed the shamanic path via ethnobotanicals and every drug I thought was useful. Drugs are like a videotape (not a door). Once you see the place on the videotape, you know it's there. Then you can actually GO there...(without the video) that's my lame metaphor. Drugs will be in any scene. I learned a lot from both the good and the misery they caused me. You have to take the good w/ the bad. It's not up to us to judge those using drugs. What it is for us to do is smile and let the vibe of our love penetrate the universe. Our vibe- the trance vibe- the one vibe- that will conquer all the negativity. I love trance, the fluidity and the constant change and evolution of it psy and goa will never die because they are based on change; they will always adapt. I'm more into psy than Goa but Trance is in my soul. I first came into elctronica from techno when I was about 13 but I wasn't really into it. I switched to rock, hard rock and metal after that for about 2yrs. Then because I was going to clubs I started getting into house which to my detriment is what they play in Greek clubs. I got bored of it and then the miracle happened. A mate of mine introduced me into psy. I have been into trance since then and although I listen to all kinds of music, trance is my favourite. I think...goa and psycadelic trance is the best way to get away from the hum-drum of life and forget about the crap. I'm only new to goa and psy trance, I discovered it a year ago when I moved to Dublin and got totaly into it after seeing Cosmosis in the Temple Bar Music Centre earlier last year. If you're reading this Bill and Jez, when are you comeing back to Dublin? you were fucking great. If you want to sample some psy trance I would recomend Cosmosis' Synergy album particulary tracks 7 and 8, down at the crossroad and the big bang boogy. Other stuff to lookout for: Man with no Name on Perfecto, Art of Trance and Union Jack on Platipus and most stuff on Transient records. As I said I'm only new to this but I'm learning fast. If anyone can recomend any other good sounds I'd love to hear from you. Also I'd love to have a go at making some Goa and Psy trance. Is there anyone out there who could tell me what gear I need to get started? (Cheap is Important) Take care of yourselves. Party hard.

there is a certain psychology behind the music. some people cannot get away from drug interaction in order to experienc ethe music's soul, and i believe that is very shallw because the music itself stands alone in its own existence. it creates its own definitions and defines its own boundaries (sometimes music can be boundless, and when it is, it is groundbreaking). yet it is open to interpretation, henceforth people have the right to experience the music in any manner they please. and what manner people shoose to experience the music in turn dictates how far the psychology is understood; how far the language is interpreted into feelings and emotions. and i think tha once a person can get to that understanding they have conquered music cognitivey, they have made that transition form listening to knowing, to understanding, to learning. and the fact that music is able to make us understand life and its subtlties is amazing. and you don't need drugs to KNOW, if you can be open to knowing and learning from the start.

I guess Psytrance used to be really good. The latest compilations cannot please me as a lover of psytrance. It used to be only 303's then came the atmosphere around the song. Now i feel like only the atmosphere counts. Whole songs ( mostly from artists like Atmos) with only soundfx and no real melody's. I really like the old stuff from man with no name, MFG, Hallucinogen and all from Green Nuns ( they are so cool). Drugs are okay too, the only time its bad to do drugs at raves is if you're 'floored' and just sit there all night or over dose and get the rave busted up. I have never done a pill in my life and dont intend to because i can fell the music and appreciate whats on offer without being fucked!!! I do wonder what pills are like but enjoying it as much as i do i dont follow my wonder! So if any of you out there are reading this, try a night of pure trance without a pill before you have a night on pills and see what you think first. I admit that i cannot dance for as long a perid as some of my mates who are on pills but as long as i have a break for a few mins at least once an hour i am sorted and im still raving at 6 or 7!!!! I agree only a "sub-style", but a very powerful style indeed. If you want brilliant GOA, go party in Isreal. If you want brilliant PsyTrance and some GOA, go to Cape Town, South Afirca in the summer. Vortex, Alien Safari and Groovy Troopers parties are briliant. As for drugs - well, sometimes it is necessary to access the axis mundi more direct. I do party without drugs, but ever so often one need to move some enegry and access bliss.

I think...Psychedelic Trance, Hard Trance and Acid is energy for the soul. Once you you have been there, I mean 'up there', you have to go back there all the time. In order to understand Trance music you have to dance to it, not drive to it because, I know, it can be fatal on highways. I think there is a special bond or link that units people in a rave, especially when there are thousands of people 'travelling' at the sound of speed at the time. A few years back, i didn't even know about trance. i didnt give it a chance. then i went to motor lounge in detroit. rolled for my first time, and it exposed me to a new sound i didn't even know about. whats best is that you can listen to it on drugs, or not on drugs, and its especially awesome to listen to on a hot day when your lying in the sun. not only that, the people you meet at trance clubs are always friendly and love dancing and great times.

Call me old fashion, but spirtuality and understanding of the self can not come from the ease and comfort of an external source, even music. In fact nothing but fortitude and mental mite can help you on that quest... But I find LSD can often convince me of the wonderful harmony of the world and innerconectiveness. I think...way too many people have posted waaayy too many messages on this board.....but now im here to do the same. Ever since the first time that i went to a rave about 7 months ago and i first felt the music instead of just hearing it(i allways had sort an ear for it but my friends hated it so I never had a chance to listen to it) I've been hooked I never knew how deep the music goes my friends still think its a bunch of bull shit sounds put together to make a rythym and in a way it is. But the way its put together is what makes the DJ an artist it's allmost like painting a picture.....only the picture that they paint is alive it moves hundereds sometimes thousands of kids painting the sky with theyre glow stix, spreading love with theyre hands and meeting new people with theyre faces. The drugz only take you so far through the gateway its up to you to flow threw it and believe me when you flow you know it, and when you glow you show it:) so flow threw each day touching as many lives as you can and remember stay high! aCiDeX(a.k.a. It bothers me when people think they "Know" because they have experienced a few hours on dirty drugs. I was in Goa(Vagator beach) in december 1999 and i was there until begining of February. For me goa-trance is the most colourfull music. psychedelic music (please,not goa trance because it limits the sound) is music for the open mind...the diffe- rent effects and sounds resonate in your body and give you much stronger and more magical feelings than any other kind of musicstyles give.and if these sounds are combined with groovylicious bootyshake beats it makes your body want to move and express your enlightend state. mind at large that's what it's all about:a short or longer timespan where you get a taste of the divine sublime state of enlightment...sadly you find very often in these spiritual gatherings also people who do alcohol, extacy (which often contains more bullshit that anything psychedelic),amfetamin etc. these people distruct the fragile atmosphere in their ignorant selfishness by making themselves very noticed,their behaviour is disturbing and sometimes mentally or physically hostile especially if we talk about young firsttime users. psychoactive drugs or meditation give you also something back after the "trip" is over.the other sad thing is that psychedelic music has taken major steps backwards in the last few years in europe:tip's last compilation 3-d and beyond color were absolutely smashing! but what happened? tip disapeared for some time and then finally reappeared as tip-world...but it wasn't the same anymore: unimaginative trance done many times before...'99 was the black year in psychedelic music,well trance,and the effects are still to be seen:atmos is a topseller with his most boring album ever (sorry atmos) and so on... whrer are the new,imaginative and fraking tunes? why doesn't anyone have the balls to release them!?! well, luckily we still have demontea,edgecore and psy-harmonics in australia and exogenic and surreal audio in finland who keep the weirdness-factor-flag high in the air.thank you!

Sadly, b/c of my age, i have never been to a rave; the closest i've come is the HFStival trancemissions tent (if you live near washington DC, you may know what i'm talking about). i love acid, weed, and extacy. especially extacy. when i listen to techno, it's like an expirence.... the music just fills you up and flows through you. you have to get up and move with the music. totally peaceful, intensely spiritual. you feel free and completely unified ith everyone around you. i'm just waiting for my first rave, and i know it will be an unforgettable expirence. hopefully, i'll be able to go to a few raves before the scene totally dies out. it IS dying. i've been part of a crew called 'PULSE' on the isle of man (small place near LIVERPOOL) for about 5 years now and we seem to be the main source for RAVE's on are small island, but although the rave's are small (about 150-200 people) the atmosphere is out of this world. I was over at CREAMFIELDS this year and to be honest i've had better nights at our small gatherings. Well..I'm a christian and I believe in Jesus. When I first discovered goa/goatrance I liked it very much and I started collecting more songs. Then I wondered why the songnames were so...different. They all reminded me of India somehow... Then I went to a goa infopage and learned that the music really originated from India and it was in deal with Shiva and other Indian mythology.. I don't want to hear much of goa anymore, because I can't praise the lord while listening to it because the music originally comes from Satan. (Indian gods are really fake, they're all from Satan.) I think...that there are still new possibilities for new forms of melodic pscyhc or goa trance to be invented or to surface from the deep realms of the underground world. I think its time to ditch the 4-4 beats (so 90's!) but not loose the emotional uplifting, euphoric melodies, chords and dynamic harminies present in the recent stuff. I compose trance music myself and at the moment i.m focusing on breakbeat trance with garage influences! WHAT? thats right, picture it! Garage beats and BASSLINEs with breakbeat drum patterns (no more boring overdone offbeat hi-hat patterns zzzzzz) and best of all the melodies and backing of trance. Funnily enough it works as many of my friensds and general peole I know find it amazing and a couple of record companies have shown interest, namely Arista! Categorisation in this case is purely an aid. I see categorising music to have no part in the enjoyment factor that is achieved from it, it has an alterior purpose.

I recently tried XTC and I have to say that it was the coolest feeling I've every exsperianced in my whole life. I loved everybody, even those I really can't stand being around. I can't help but to say that my relationship is 100% better than ever, and the sex on XTC is out of this world. I'm not as stressed as I use to be. I think that goa, or any type of trance touches any or every emotion that you have. Weather its energetic goa, or smooth melodic trance, you can just let your mind rest. I think...Maybe it is all like this. Life, as expressed in terms of fractal energy hologramatic patterns (whatever the current level of understanding permits in definition)is embodied by the expressions found in goa and psy trance. The closest forms to goa/psy may be the music of the 60's that was focused on the peace revolution, raising the music, and other related art, to the level of universal prayer expressions. In the Gomantak Times today it says that some 70% of Goan women think its ok for the husbamd to beat his wife up. The rich from Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, etc outnumber the foriegn contingent by a vaste amount, possibly 4 to 1, according to the most recent Dept of Tourism figures I have seen. The hippies tend to congregate in the North, Bardez Taluka, and stay in small guest houses, eat at family run cafes and most of the money stays there. In fact in was the local Panchayat that prevented the Govt of Goa closing the Flea Market in Anjuna this season. However in South Goa, the Leela et al have stolen virtually ALL of the local water, built illegally close to the shore, then payed off sucessive Goverments. The same is soon to happen in Arambol/Harmal. For all of the hatred expressed for foriegners by one man and the rather ridiculous assertion that it was not part of the "Indian Psche" to think like that (Shiv Sena anyone? Marati raiders destroy half of Bengal a couple of centuries ago, remeber? Khali and her followers, Thugees/Decievers anyone?) most of the foriegners that seem to upset the Goans are the package tourists, they dont seem to mind that there are white women who will fuck them or get their tits out on the beach. Indians are no better or worse than anyone else, too many westerners go there thinking that they will find a land of mystics, but only in India can you advertise a TV with the line, "Owners pride, neighboudrs envy". I got introdued into the world of Goa under a year ago by a friend. I'm still finding new levels to it that give me a new sensation each time. My friend recently learnt how to mix and has been addicted ever since. Her ability to melt each track into each other leaves me stunned every time and she is so good at it because she really FEELS the music. If i could describe my experiences of Goa it is as if all the levels of the subconcious are obsorbed into a single musical emotion described by Goa that everyone can experience if they open their hearts to it and it'll find it's own prsence in their lives.

I am getting into the whole idea of Trance music and what it means.... First a bit about me. I am 29 years old and since I left school, through college and University I have just been another square British guy who thought that hanging out in pubs and clubs, getting drunk on beer and spirits was the best way. When the underground rave scene was in full swing back in the early nineties, I looked down on the people who went to these places and who 'got out of it' and I thought that they were a bit sad. Since I graduated from University and began my professional career I had a re-union with some of my old college mates in a club in England. Eight of us pilled for the first time ever and we had a mind blowing experience. Everything clicked into place at that point and I realised that it was actually the Real Thing. Since the two years from that event, my alcohol consumption has dropped from weekend frenzys to very rarely. I have carried on going to clubs in Birmingham where I live and I have made a few clubbing friends. One of these guys has introduced me to trance and has told me that it is the purest way to be musically uplifted either to party to or to chill to. I fully agree with this and I want to get more into the scene. I have even started listening to some of my old Shamen tapes, which isn't trance or goa, but there are references to Shamanism, life forces and Illuminati, which I just never picked up on and realised the significance of earlier on... My point is, I am sorry that I never got into this scene years ago, I feel that I was conditioned by society to accept alcohol and disregard partying and raves as underground, unclean and sad. I have now realised the way that things really are and I am ready to move on now into this trance dimension. I would really appreciate it if there is anyone from the English Midlands (or thereabouts) who can take pity of my plight and furnish me by email of the best places to go... Perhaps some of you may even be kind enough to arrange to meet up with me and guide me through my first trance party event. I am sorry that I have previously sinned, I hope that this posting is the changing event for me.... Please help. Thankyou.

I KNOW....that when the rave is over and the trip is through, the shit is cashed and the "fun" has been had...it's bullshit! i've done more than my share of LSD, METH, SHROOMS, CRACK, COKE, WEED, SMACK, X, UPPERS, DOWNERS, LIQUOR, all sorts of PHARMIES, the truth is in the end i got fucked. i lost everything and it started out with the psycedelics. it started out so innocent and ended up so fucked up! when i finally got clean, by then i was hurting so bad that i couldn't stand up anymore or knew my name and when i spoke everyone kept saying they couldn't understand me. this wasn't from DT'S or any other withdrawals, it was from what the drugs over a period of 7 years had done to my psychological makeup to the point where it effected me physically as well. do i miss the drugs now? sometimes yes but all i have to do is think of the fucked up shit i saw and the things that happened to me and the people i hurt and the money i spent on things that could never help me now instead of paying for an education. or what about the nights and days when it's all over and you can't get to sleep or the rat poison stomache aches, passing out at unappropriate times, trying to drive home when you can't even see, puking, drinking amounts of water too large for a normal person so you don't burn up and ruin your high, and all the other things you will never get over like being raped...like me. i loved getting high but the drugs never loved me back. so just think about who loves you. i wrote this because I DO!

I keep wondering ... was my first goa/trance/psychedelic music party a one-way ticket ... ever since i've been more aware of myself - took some E - drank quite a bit of Acid by accident but had one great time. That was september of this year. GREATINGS TO ALL PEOPLE out there in Portugal WHO VISITED Herdade De Zambujal Party 01/09/2001 - THE CRAZY BELGIAN WHO DROVE ALL THE WAY THERE !!! Still, i feel sensations of fear on this uncertain wonderous path i walk upon. Went to a party, dancing wildly almost all night (10PM untill 08am) LONG ! Using nothing but Marie-Jane and Hasj. Isn't it fair to say such cannot be easily explained ??? Especially not when you wake up after 5 hours of sleep and are extremely fit ALL DAY LONG. More aware, physically only a slight sensation of fatigue ... This was not my first 'hyper' experience and it makes me feel very humble to the power of Unity wich i experience so intensly while dancing. Someone please explain !!! Is this not what a religous experience is like ? Feeling invigorated thru the presence of a greater being within ourselves and around ourselves. Is it the music, or the Marijuana that is supposed to make one vegetative ... that does the trick ??? No sign of exhaustion, NOT tired for days afterwards. Wich people who take E might have experienced. No more chemicals for me if this keeps going. My poor legs and arms only started to feel sore two days later ... To me there is only ONE God wich has many ways to be found i hope i'm not making myself ridiculous up there by saying God apparently does not turn away from people who look to expand their mind. I think... that all kinds of electronic music are beautiful in their own way, and all kinds of music for that matter. it's all a matter of personal opinion and what your into. alot of it has to do with where you are at particular time in your life. when i first started partying all i wanted to hear was house. and my tastes have changed dramatically since then. but i can always go back to my love for those phat funky base lines that house music provides for my listening pleasure. but then i love to be in the middle of the desert hearing some great psy trance or goa trance. taking my mind out of reality as we know it. i don't think it has to do at all with consuming mind altering substances at all. although at first they help alot of people get to that mind state. but once you have been there i believe you can always go back high on drugs, music, dancing, or just high on the people around you. thats what is so beautiful about the music and dancing and being around so many people who are feeling it at the same time. you feed off of eachother and eachothers energy. it happens with all sorts of different kinds of music. it just seems that there are more aware people in the electronic music scene pystrance especially all together at the same time. but not limited to that one particular scene. ever seen the grateful dead? talk to some old hippies and hear their experiences you may find that they are quite similiar. but this is just my simple minded opinion. have a beautiful day. peace.
