Why "Goa Trance"?

Goa Trance is a style of psychedelic trance music, originated in Goa but now played all over the world. Spread by travelling DJs, it is one of the most cosmopolitan genres of dance music. But many of its current 'leaders' have never been to Goa, so the term "Goa Trance" is now no more than a convenient label. It is the style and vibe that are unique.

I think...Goa Trance or any Psychadaelic Trance is absolutely amazing in that it is the lost link between the Intense Energy of Hendrix and all other most excellent rock and blues Hardcore artists, and the club scene. I play rock and blues in a band and I also mix Goa trance. The way both of them are made is of the same stuff!!! YAHOO!!

Goa is the essence of musical expression combined with rhythmic delight. The line drawn between goa and drugs is somewhat warped and misunderstood. Although at times they may enhance each other, there is no need for chemicals when you have Goa. Goa is the drug. Goa fuels your spirit, and can be divinely relaxing and at the same time can give you the adrenaline rush of your life. There is nothing else that does that. Amazing. I myself am a psychedelic trance DJ, having played only in Norway, and England, and I also produce music, although slightly less psychedelic, mainly because I daren't tread on the soil which has been trod upon by such legends as Astral Projection, Miranda, or Halucinogen. I will not start producing goa music until I am sure that I can innovate, rather than immitate. However, I also play the djembe, which is a west-african hand-drum, and it is a joy to witness how well the ancient African rhythms work together with goa. I have had many a night spent with my drum and my records. I would like very much for any like minded goa souls to contact me.

Wickedly complex, terribly intricate, progressive and regressive... Goa is like a novel for your mind. Dynamic ups and downs in this form of trance make listening to the same track fresh everytime. I love this stuff. Off topic... I had an MFG CD in the deck a while ago and took it out to switch up CDs. The radio station I have in the background is classical (cuz I hate gettin blasted with wack top 40). Oddly enough, I can draw some serious similarities between the two ultra-contradictory genres of Goa and Classical... Hmmm... Sentinel 686

I think...that goa trance is the perfect music to dance or to concentrate for any purposes even for jugling or jioga. it takes u to an other world a different universe and you don't have to take drugs to have a good time when u are to a rave party it's the music and the beat that makes feel so good also scientists say that when you listen this kind of music your brain work better so that he can ghange the signals he get into music so that we can listen it. this happens cause the music it's too fast i believe that it's the music of the future. even now in rock or jazz music there are electronic sounds and everything is going to become like goa apostolis greece

Real Goatrance in the 'original style' is harder to find with every new upcomin´ commercial track. Lot´s of dj´s and musikmakers jumped on the goatrain but never knew something about the real mind of the great psychedelic goa trance, i guess... How ever, the world will continue rotating and thats good, isn´t it?

In my personal, goa-music changed my life. I heard lot´s of rock, punk `n other stuff until my very first visit on a private goaparty here at germany. (Heaven - that was in 1994 !) I had never heard about them so my first thoughts were: "What, the hell, i´m doing here?! - How will i manage such strange music??"
Today i´m always loughin´ about myself when i´m thinking about my 'first contact'. But I really never wanted to change! By the way: Being on that party for half a hour, smoking some nature ;-) i began to love (!) the music! Also fantastic: While dancing, one guy hit another with his elbow right into the face hardly (by mistake). Well, if that happend in a disco they surely would had a fight. But (for my surprise) while the first guy was excusing, the other just said "no matter, we´re all here to party and dance, aren´t we?" and continued dancing. Whow! I was really impressed!! :-) That was my first Goa-Party-Impression and my first goa-party-story. Today i could tell stories all night long...

I had a hard time in 94, but this music brought me back A VERY LOT of fun, pleasure, love and life-quality. (That´s the truth!) So it isn´t hard to beleave, i really like that stuff! I wish peace & sunshine to all of ya!

Goa and Psychedelic trance is the best music with beats. Some technos are really good, but most of them are boring, some House pieces are good to, but they can't be compared to trance, dance and pop is shit music for pussy toys. Melodic uplifting trance is becoming mainstream in Greece, and that's verry bad, it's not nice when all those toys are listening to the same music as you. But the opposite thing isn't nice either, I visited my parents in England last summer and no-one in the county knew what psychedelic trance is. FAZE from Menidi City,Athens

I love Goa because the sound of it, and that it`s more than just a sound! No other music can lift you up to another level like Goa! It became pretty large in Sweden in -97, but not THAT large! But I think it whould loose it`s musterius sound and the GREAT tune if it ever came up on the top 40, or the European Top-list... Acid,Trance and Techno Is music... Goa is a Culture... A Gye in Sweden...

coming from a goan. and a person who has seen the parties in goa and heard the music, i must say i am impressed at all the support that goa trance is getting. If u visit the place(goa) u will be able to understand the way that the music, the salt air, the lights, the drinks, the drugs, the beach and the view makes u go out of the world and forget everything except bliss..... As goa is raw and not that well developed as the USA or europe, the undeveloped natural atmosphere can be intoxicating.... be warned. Some floks like to make it their permenent home. Go GOA... The only drawback is u have to pass through parts of india; not that bad though.

I've been to Goa, and I must say the atmosphere there is absolutely undescrivable, you have to see it to believe it...but it's incredible how this music can bring back sensations of the place as if I were still there, though a few years have already gone by. If anybody has even remotely taken into consideration the thought of visiting Goa, I strongly suggest that he or she do so, while it's still there...you'll NEVER regret it;)))

HANG ON A MINUTE YOU GUYS SOUND LIKE YOU'VE JUST ARRIVED ON THIS PLANET AND DON'T ALL KNOCK YOURESELVES OUT...TRANCE IS GREAT NO DOUBT BUT DON'T ALL OF YOU GUYS REALISE WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN GOA OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS? THE POLICE ARE BUSTING INNOCENT PEOPLE FOR CARRYING NOTHING AND IN MANY CASES BEATING THEM,THE WILDLIFE HAS RETREATED AND THE LOCALS ALL GANG UP ON THE FEW FOREIGNERS THAT HANG AROUND OR OVERSTAY DURING APRIL AND MAY BEFORE MONSOON. THEY ARE A JUNGLE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN OVER EXPOSED TO THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT ARE THERE TO GET STONED AND DANCE ALL NIGHT (GREAT FUN EH!!)HOW MUCH WILDLIFE IS DISTURBED BY RAVERS "OFF THEIR HEADS" AND RIDING THROUGH THE JUNGLE ON ENFIELDS..ISN'T TRANCE ABOUT MOTHER NATURE AND ALL THAT NEW AGE STUFF? WHEN THEY BRING IN 15000 WATTS OF SPEAKERS INTO A WILDLIFE AREA I'M SURE ALL THE ANIMALS LOVE THOSE FARTING 303'S AND SUB 40HZ BASS LINES BUT DON'T WORRY GUYS BECAUSE THEY ARE BUILDING EVEN MORE NEW CHEAP RATE HOTELS FOR PACKAGE TOURISTS SO PARTY GOERS CAN ALL MOVE NORTH OF THE RIVER AND RUIN ARAMBOL AS WELL........ (START SOMETHING NEW AND PROTECT IT IF YOU ARE A DJ OR PLANNING ON PUTTING ON HAPPENINGS BUT LEAVE GOA ALONE) YOU WILL FIND THAT IF YOU DON'T BRIBE THE POLICE THEY WILL CONFISCATE YOUR EQUIPMENT (DON'T DREAM OF TAKING 1200'S THERE) THE GOA POLICE HAVE ENOUGH ALREADY AND YOU WILL ALWAYS SEE SOME GEAR HANGING AROUND ANJUNA POLICE STATION. I STAYED THERE FOR A YEAR AND DJ'ED AT JUNGLE PARTIES-REGGAE BARS AND EVEN GOOD OLD TITO'S WITH IT'S BLEACH BLOND PACKAGE TOURISTS (NO DATS THERE MATE!!),BUT IF YOU TRAVEL TO GOA TRY AND LOOK WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON AROUND YOU AND LEARN BECAUSE IT IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND LETHAL PLACE. KEEP IT REAL!! AND BE CAREFUL............... DJ HERBIE (U.K PRODUCER IN CHINA..WHERE WE PLAY TRANCE!)

I think...goa has lost some of it's specialty. when i was there the parties were pretty average, the mixing was average, and the tunes were verging on the cheese side (as were the people). for some serious goa trance/psychadelic trance/tribal trance we can thank people like juno reactor, sawgama, angus young!! i owe my musical 'coming out' to trance. it truly does transcend boundaries, it is intelligent electronica. no other genre takes so many sounds, harmonies and beats, so much soul, and so much love, to take you to the highest level of musical enjoyment. trance music has no ego. it's all about the stomp. keep on stompin! om shiva! boom shankar!

How would they like it if 500 Indians arrived on their estate in the West unannounced and proceeded to have their own party with Traditional food, music etc and then decided not to clean up after themselves. Bollocks! You people are supporting massacres in sri Lanka which you seem to believe is part of INDIA. The Tamil Tigers are trained and supported by your country (they have a nice little meeting house in MAPUSA on the big hill that runs towards BOMBAY)for anybody that visits MAPUSA. In COLOMBO,SRI LANKA those peace loving little people are getting blown to bits by HINDU extremists by the dozen, great religion mate! There are countless amputees begging in COLOMBO because of your countries support of these scum and you dare to suggest (If indians left a mess!) Q. why are there no children amputees in SRI LANKA? A. because a "BOUNCING BETTY" mine usually blows the head of a child Every year thousands of indians party at London's Notting hill carnival but they don't pull indians off their motor bikes and rape them or beat them with poles that have barbed wire wrapped around.(may 97 VAGATOR) get your facts right, you don't know Goa at all. Van loads of thugs arrive daily from Bombay who are looking for a cheap blonde fuck but then you haven't read the sad soft tittie porn mags with the decadent blonde fantasy stories have you? Often in DISCO VALLEY young ladies visit the bushes to answer the call of nature and get raped by the TATA VAN boys(they don't even have any toilet facilities at any of the parties and the mess the next day is sick) LUCKILY for goa there are loads more of wet behind the ears trance fans and travellers that are easy pickings and you people only attack in hoards and choose the belt buckle end of a belt as your tool so don't complain when there is a beating in another country because you folks send people home in Boxes but then again you will deny that won't you. Yes,we point fingers but that's better than an AK47!

He was on his way home after dinner, had not been drinking (his friend was following behind)he said. "I saw a headlamp coming the other way and watched Richie move over to give it ample space to pass". They were both killed instantly as their Enfield bullet smashed into the front of a truck with only one light. Hey Freedomtoparty, YOU get your facts straight. First of all I'm British, living in the UK, secondly don't politicize the trance scene in this way. If you want to complain about atrocities caused by the Tamil Tigers(Who by the way are Terrorists and belong in the same camp as Militants in Kashmir, the IRA in Northern Ireland and ETA in Spain)then do it on a page that is appropriate. This page is for why people like this music. You want to talk about amputees then fine. I've seen my fair share as well. When Western powers are the ones supplying their arms to 3rd world countries to make even more money out of them then who is to blame? When western powers carved up the planet between themselves 150 odd years ago and imposed their divide and rule policy, then who is to blame? Did you know that Tamils(And I ain't even remotely of Tamil origin) came to Sri Lanka hundreds of years ago. Did you know that Tamils and the Singhalese people have never really got on with each other. Did you know that Sri Lanka was also Hindu until the reign of the Emperor Asoka, who then converted to Buddhism and spread Buddhism throughout South and South East Asia? Do you judge all Hindus by the actions of a militant minority? Perhaps I should judge all white people for their forefathers crimes against non-whites like slavery, colonialism, imperialism, capitalism etc etc etc. You talk about supporting massacres, but where was the west when genocide was going on in Rwanda and Burundi. Supporting massacres indeed. YOU people who go to 3rd World countries, create your 'Tye-dye Ghettos' and bring your satellite and cable TV with your Hollywood movies with sex and violence and your MTV. Did you ever stop and THINK what kind of effect these things would have on an illiterate people. I don't know Goa? Fine maybe I don't know Goa from a white person's perspective, but I sure know it from an Indian person's perpsective. Water shortages for the locals because of the big hotels taking all the water to cater for the tourists. Backpackers arriving every year with their drugs and crazy acid parties causing a mess and having a bad influence on the locals. Yes there are bad elements, but from your ranting and raving you are lumping all the Indians together and blaming them. People like you should n't go to India. You obviously have no concept of what it is to be Indian or a Hindu. If you dislike India and Indians so much then you shouldn't go there. Live long and party!

I think...dancing is wicked. We should spend all our time dancing until we transcend the boundries of space and time and become pure nrg. An nrg which relies on nothing but good vibes and adrenalin. Institutionalized dance spaces create this kind of nrg but it is polluted through being contained. Just like our minds and souls are....

The trance i have experienced in Japan, with Dj's and Pa's like Tsuyoshi, Shakta, Simon Posford, and many others, has entirely changed my life. From the first party i went to in Japan, which was under a bridge in tokyo and lasted 2 or 3 days, i was addicted. I dont even listen to any of my old music. Shakta changes my world when i listen to his stuff. Like im pulled out, spun around, and injected into another reality which can only be discribed by the movement and fluidness that the music concours your mind with. The poeple i see all around me, dancing with a certain peace on their faces makes me realize that the aura of a trance party unites for hours on end, to flow bounce twist and spin our collective way through dimensions. And at those crucial moments when the beat stops, the thin sounds race around like crazy spirits, for only a mere second or so, until the dj drops in a infectious beat that immediately takes control, and sends all listening jumping to the stars. seanmattingly@hotmail.com

Fri Feb 25 17:17:36 GMT 2000
Thanks Sean. What I said about the 'ghettos' was just meant to make people sit up and think. My sister went to Goa a couple of years ago and told me about some people who had gone over there to 'relax'. That's OK. But what really annoyed her was some of the verbal bullshit coming out of some dreadlocked dude from London. He was(apparently) complaining about the 'Indians' trying to sell things to him all the time. When I went to Goa for the first time, I had to listen to people complaining about Indians at the parties being drunk. Now for a white person to say this sort of thing to a brown person(me) comes across as very arrogant to say the least. Remember one thing people. India is their country, and they have been(for whatever reasons) good enough to allow the parties to go on. My sister has had to deal with Indian men groping her(and she's of Indian descent). It's a problem all over India and is due in part to lack of education and people copying what they see on TV. It's called 'Eve teasing' and is always being talked about as a major problem all over India. The reason alot of Western are affected as well is due again to lack of education and cultural values. In India, women don't necessarily walk on the beach in bikinis/swimsuits. They tend to stay in their saris and traditional suits. The mentality of the common Indian man is very sad in that he will perceive western women as of loose character and free with sex. You get alot of guys coming down from Bombay/Mumbai, getting drunk etc etc and then trying it on. All I can suggest to western women if you want to avoid all the hassle, is to say you are married(even if you are not) and wear a ring on the marriage finger. All my friends in India would not dream of harassing women at all. Just remember that India is a very poor 3rd world country. The money you have in your pocket will seem like a fortune to some of the locals. Do in Rome as the Romans do. If you haven't been to India before, then speak to someone who has been there/lived there. Police are police no matter where you go, and in India they are particularly corrupt. Goa as a place to party is getting more and more dangerous. It's had it's day. India is a huge country and I for one will be(With the help of friends living in India) putting on some parties later in the year. Definitely not in Goa though. Take care everyone and live long and party! Bom Shankar and Namaste!

I`m now listening to elektronic for more than about 8 years and from the first moment on I was fascinated about this typ of music. I`ve been to lots and lots of techno-parties over the years nealy from the beginning until now and I think there is no other style in case of techno music, that represents the spirit of freedom and total XTC better than GOA-Trance.It`s like the early years of techno when nobody thought about what to wear or how to dance. You came, you danced you`ve been happy. That kind to party you can only find today on GOA-Parties. I`m now DJ`ing for about 3 years and only GOA-Parties give me the forum to create a set over hours to show the people my defenition of getting higher and higher into the music. So keep on keeping on.

Some time ago, I was a fanatic listener of many genders of techno. At first, I was excited about the possibilities of "totally new, never heard before, artificial sounds", of late 80's-early 90's techno, had the same reactions by friends as you. The followed a period of "breakbeat-hardcore", even gabba, eventually trance, acid (I LOVE THIS SHIT!), goa-psychedelic (with a great deal of concern I might add), till it died out, I am afraid... I even tried out house or disco-house (YIKES!) after that, but... The fact remains that as I hear all those songs, sometimes even close to 10 years after, I get the feeling that this was really crappy music, no way I can get the same feeling as I used to. It was magic. I (thought) it needed a great deal of analysis and thinking, you needed to concentrate to fully appreciate it. Maybe it was all about adolescence. Maybe it was just the fact that this music evolved from almost nothing, and it was a totally new, fully promising experience at the time, but now it's only cliche's, even the most underground genders have gone mainstream. I am getting the feeling that techno as we knew it, is now officially dead. Too bad. And a special word about psychedelic trance today: IT TOTALLY SUCKS! It has been 2-3 years since I last heard a descend song of this kind, everything I hear is the stupid saw synth-no acid-"pew" drum-bullshit. Maybe too many E's finally burned the musician's mind. Or this music had much-much less ways to evolve, that we all thought it would. That's it. I am moving to rock! :-)

Last saturday i had the trip of my life. I had done acid before, but this time the music was psychedelic trance... I was happily crazy, y talked to myself as a brother, i loved the world and I found God. I don`t know what does Goa have. I guess it's it`s freedom, or it`s astral energy, or the fact that it represents a new way of life, a reconsideration and negation of old and rot values. Be free, let your soul mix with trance, the time you`ve been waiting for is right now, and it will always be right now.

i am a sober US raver, dedicated to exploring the primeviel relationship between rythem, movement and spirituality. i've never been to goa, i don't dig chasing someone else's dream of five years ago. our magick usually takes place with 50 people, a generator, and miles (if possible) sperating us from our closest neighbor. trance is our potion, goa is often the flavor. trance, stars, fire, wind, earth... these are the basic elemental forces of my universe. call it goa, call it cyber, call it physco, call it logic, i call it good. it is the music that plugs my spine directly into the universal supra-conscienceness. if you think the music is tired then you need to take a break from the clubs and the drugs and the scene and the social climbing. there are more people today producing more quality tracks then ever before, and the best escape and defy difination. and it is only going to get better as more and more people realise that the only way to fully tune in is to take care of their body and the delicate chemical balance of their mind. hugs and plur to all of humanity... and please remember to respect yourself as you party.

I love GOA! No music (I know) makes you higher! I'm quite sad about these wannabe-tchnomakers, who produce and throw their music onto the "market" only for selling. This music has no soul and it's up to the DJs to play the right music. I don't hope GOA will die just because of music that is no GOA, even music that is only made by pressing a few times with the mouse. GOA is not dead but their are to many monoton songs with only one melody that call them selves GOA. I can imagine that even if you go in 10 years onto an open air party with all that belongs 2 it. You'll still love it. GOA is a lifestyle. And people who can't live this lifestyle 'll say GOA is dead. If you look at Gabba, how old is it? How many said it is dead? The same's with GOA! If it's eaten the group'll be small again!

Open up people. Goa is just a small part of the flow of creation. It is not the be all and end all; just a drop of water in a sea of possibilities. All music is the fundamentally the same just the same as if you may not like one fruit but love another. Don't get me wrong I've been writing electronic music for 7 years and still find the psy/goatrance genre the most satisfying. Why? Quite simply - Because. Although the spirit of this music is abundant in Goa it doesn't mean that we all have to worship this place we have a whole universe which is far more deserving of this praise. Come down to earth and realise your own potential. Music symbolises whatever you want and within that you find an escape INTO reality and not out of it. Remember your mind creates your reality. Don't change your mind change you mindset. Break free from expectation and follow you own path. We are all free from the moment we choose to be. Understanding, Peace and Love to all. Free your Mind, Body and Soul.

I think...that any form ov misic can move people. trance is a basic form of beats that relate to every living entity. in the mammials case the movement of a heart beat, breathing, your eyelids opening and closing, the sounds and rithems of our limbs swaying with the wind. This theory can also be seen not only in mammals but in other forms of life as well, plants can grow, the rythem of the leaves, tne erosion ov the earth, the movement of the plants, the scattering ov the insects. What makes trance a bad thing is that we the "superior beings" have clamed it as our own, which is selfish, since everything that humans tend to interfear with seems to become destroyed. music is the essence ov life in a sence, to be shared, enjoyed and most importantly RESPECTED by EVERYONE, in relation with EVERYTHING. have respect and love all things....... .......scarlet...

I think...Goa trance is one thing, one perfect thing in life which contains all perfection. Trance fuses the devil with god, showing humans that the two are the same. Bringing the most eco-conscious(trance dancers) people on the planet together and causing environmental damage(forest trampling, bass etc) showing the true nature of being perfect. From the above opinions one can fall in love with the idealism of the trance culture while being outraged at the destruction. Both sides are equal and lead to the perfection of life. Keep the beats crackin(cause they are the shit') keep the trees fallin(gotta let the OLD mind worry 'bout something) and let the war of life continue. Eveyrthing on this planet is perfect, so lets do our darndest to mess it up(and I speak seiously) that is life

I think...that Goa Trance is a misunderstood beast. It seems from some of the comments above that people see it as a repository for drug fried brains. Ive fried my brain on drugs before so what - it all becomes passe, but what remains is the emotion that this music can create within you. Ive stomped in many a forest to many a type of electronic music, but Ive never experienced the unity that a psy-trance party has to offer. Dawn breaks, the music wakes you inside and you see crowds of ppl madly stomping but grinning wildly - sure the acid reigns, but so does the vibe. Psych merlin - you get to see both sides of the coin, you have balance and for that ppl should respect you - there is too much imbalance in todays electronic music scene :( Peace rules & Jimmy The Plate is an awesome track

I think... I'd like to get some info from psychedelicmerlin about events that might go on in the out of the way spots. Goa is just one example of how the dream of global/universal consciousness got bought and sold by the post hippie western set. Look at Southern Thailand. Look at the scene in any former hippie backwater. The greed kills the dream of dancing into a higher plane. Face it, psychedelic trance isn't just music, it's a culture. And when culures collide, it isn't always pretty. Someone earlier made the point about television and other media from the west having an adverse effect on local cultures that hadn't been exposed to the types of things that Americans and Europeans have already become desensitized to. Well, Trance culture is also a culture of media. Instead of using the electronic music media to perpetuate the western babylon, trance should be an outpost of spirituality in the otherwise dead spiritual landscape of western musical tradition and culture. Let's cultivate the techniques of ecstacy instead of spinning the wheel of Samsara and consumption. Sorry if that sounded preachy, just something on my mind...

I think Goa trance is amazing. I travelled in India one year ago and had a two week stay in the north of Goa in a place called Chapora near the famous Anjuna, the stay was absolutely fantastic. I lost myself in the music and the environment (although Goa is not a good indicator of how India "is") and met a lot of great people. Must just give a tip, if you are in to the Goa "scene" you should make your way, firstly to India and secondly to a place called Manali in the north of India on the border to Kashmir, here the environment is psychedelic and mystical and westerners that live here are holding small parties once and a while. /Mattias from Sweden

ok goa is a place? first of all the place goa, may be where you all go to party, and its your perogative to start something and ruin it, but the rest of us who do enjoy goa music, and the goa rave scene i have been all over california, with a certain well known full moon gathering, when we show up, sometimes the place is a little dirty, we clean up, party and then we clean up again, i have rarely seen anyone throw a cigarette butt on the ground, but when people do, someone picks it up, so if goa is such a dangerous place, party else where, and bring the magic, the energy, and the music all 15000 watts there with you, the place doesnt have the vibe, the people do and thats what makes a goa party, not the location, but that does help. you may have a forest called goa, but i have a desert, and im sure in california we enjoy goatrance, just as much as the next goatrance enthusiast and some dont even know of the place, we know of the vibe and the music, the moral here is, leave a place of partying cleaner than when you got there. its the people the vibe and the energy that makes the music and the legend, so great. help save the enviroment, clean up, make friends with the locals and show them what goa is about, not that your a bunch of antienvoromentalist, out to do drug on there property with out permision or inviting them, show them the love and the vibe of goatrance and if your not supposed to be there partying, leave no trace you were there.

I think...I feel a tinge of sadness. I have listened to goa trance since 95, been to some parties, and used it as a way to break my everyday lifepattern and for meditation. I have often thought about going to Goa, but after reading some of what is written above I hesitate. Trance for me has always been the escape, never the path to more negative thinking(there is enough of that). Why mix politics into everything? I believe there has to be some parts of our minds that should be free to enjoy themselves without having to be compromised by guilt, negative thinking and moral correctness.

I "stumbled" onto a Return to the Source "sound radius" last year and was flabberghasted. I've been listening to electronic music for years (we're talking Vangelis, T-Dream, etc), when I heard this "new" trance I knew this was the missing link between powerful sonic energy and good vibes...as ass kicking as any heavy metal, and then some! I couldn't pull myself away. AND I WASN'T PSYCHO-PHARMICOLOGICALLY MODIFIED! Since then i've dug much deeper into the music, and its creation. I'm taking a hiatus from "notes" music (prog-rock, jazz-fusion) and solely concentrating on [making](psy-goa-...)trance, it's that compelling. (stepping onto the pedistool). Remember folks, there are many other types of trance that are used in religious ceremonies...check out Gnawa music from Morocco, for example. A trance event is the closest I get to a spiritual experience and I enjoying watching others having their experience. In recent times i've been watching raves get more negative press. As soon as an event gets the "rave" label, the gestapo are on top of it. In the midwest USA, a party gets shut down about 3 hours in! Please let's not let our trance ceremonies suffer the same fate. As a test to yourself, enjoy a trance without chemicals. The justification FOR drugs requires that you NOT use them; as the "unaltered" conscienceness deserves as much recoginition as "altered states" There!!!...Peace - Ganjatron

for all u fucking clowns who say the goa scene is dead or dying in anjuna, think again cause there is no place like anjuna anywhere. the parties are still chaotic, the people get freakier by the year, and the music is always there. all the people who have been the goaway probably know what its like to be a part of the psychedelic circle that anjuna encompasses. if u really wanna rock it up with a guarantee of few or no cop problems, no fucking big black bouncers showing up in your face busting u for buying trips, no parties stopping at seven a.m. then head straight to anjuna and experience the freedom of goa that we all talk about. as for all those fucking assholes who talk shit about indians, fuck all of youll cause when i was there the locals were extremely hospitable apart from some of the horny bombay boys. so all u people who complain about the problems in india and goa dont come cause we dont want u there. every place has its share of problems so deal with it. as for the parties dj jorg, goa gil what more can i say...... boom shankar and long live anjuna...........full on

like drugs and smoking, music is able to induce relaxation and even euphoria in us. this is especially so for psychedelic trance music. one is able to life himself to a higher consciousness by fully absorbing himself in the trance rhythms. bliss and esctasy can be derived in the process. all these can be achieved without the use of drugs or any other stimulant, juz some pure goa will be enuff and an aware mind would suffice. by completely losing your sense of self in trance, one is able to experience euphoria...some say is God, nirvana or brahma. it's something like meditation where some ppl focus on certain objects for our case we focus on the rhythms. using trance music as a focal point in meditation is a new experience. don't dance juz sit in a lotus position and put on your head fones. JUZ REMEMBER THAT WHAT THE BUDDHA TAUGHT IS REALLY A PRECIOUS AND ULTIMATE TEACHING ON EARTH EVER! BUDDHA LOVES U!!!.

Hi guys(psych_merlin what do you think?).....this may be the wrong place to ask this....but a good friend of mine happened to be in a car that was pulled over(in the USA),the driver had a decent amount of LSD,now the passenger is facing 20 years in prison just because he knew it was in the car....there seems to be no way around it,he is a really good person,he makes trance music and he is also buddhist.......would he be safe in india?? if not where would he be safe?? Would it be difficult to obtain indian birth records so that it looked as if he was born therre?? Is there hippie communes that he would be safe at there?? If he goes, should he bring his electronic equiptment at all??? He is really a great person, and I fear that he may kill himself if he goes to prison for that long....his soul could not take it,and frankly I could see why

Dear Dreamwind, I am saddened to hear the news of your friend. I can't really suggest anything here. India is changing at a furious rate and some people there are adopting to the western lifestyle. However there are still places out of the big cities where your friend could go. Email me if you want to discuss further(My address is on this site), but to be honest, it doesn't look to good. All the best and Trust in Trance. Namaste!

Goa trance or the evolved version, psy-trance is the music of dreams. Its a travellers tale which takes the listener, raver, on a journey. I have listed to a great variety and styles of music, and have not come across any other form of music which requires and uses the listener's mind and imagination. The depth, the flow and the different number of layers to the music just amazes me. In which other form of music can this be found, other than in trance. I think we should not be trying to creat a bad vide feel with this culture of music, as exists in other club and music sceans. Which is exactly the vibe i am picking up from a lot that has been said on this page. This world is not perfect, and not are all the creatures that walk this planet, if we are to walk together, we need to gain patientce and tolerance, and be educated so that we are able to educate others in a positive manner. DON'T LET THE BEAUTY OF THIS MUSIC AND CULTURE GET CONFUSED WITH BACKWARD POLITICS.

I think that Goa or psychedelic Trance is the most expressive music ! I enjoy the sound manipulations through the beat and the Vocoder parts...Playing trance mean to be a real musician and not a "looper" if i can say so ...If you want to create a good excerpt of Psychedelic Trance, you have to know all the possibilities of your synthesizers or samplers ...and to finish : don't limit your melodies or beats in a single loop, try to change as soon as possible to create a non linear part ...

you know what, for me and mabey for u 2 , music can do alot to your mind and body , but the most beautiful and unbelively not comperable is EMOTION in the music , all this trippy music does not inspire my soul in a way that a melody does , it's the emtion of the sound that makes your mind , body , soul lift into the sky's and let you see the universe , there you'll find the answers...I found it hard and it's hard to find ,where , whatever , nevermind.(Search and mabey one TiMe, you'll belive in what you didn't understand)(Why people don't belive in God , he shows us the right way ,so why we ignore his existence if there is only good when we follow his path)

The use of psychedelic drugs allows users to explore and use their mind in amazing ways, and it is through this exploration that trance and goa was born. It is a music that is enhanced to mimic the drug induced state. With morals and laws aside, drug use CAN lead to a higher state of consciousness, whether we can effectively navigate in it or not. And the fucking wonderful music is a depiction of that... and its superior. I love every minute of it, I eat, sleep, and live for this music. Sadly though, to the majority of people it will only be offbeat, repetitive, and too strange for their listening pleasure.

I think that guy DJ Herbie has a lot of balls, i saw him in China playing at a gathering near the Great Wall of China and had the pleasure of listening to what he had to say about Goa during an interview. .He was the only DJ in Goa that wasn't using dat tapes while he was there and had such a nice attitude.Check out what he has to say because he has "lived it" and the remixes he did of Youth's Dragonfly tracks are really creative and worth releasing.Where is Herbie ?.I know he was with Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke while they recorded in Egypt in 90 and he was seen talking to youth in the flea market, yet Herbie doesn't record with either.IS THAT A COINCIDENCE?

I think Goa and Psytrance are the divine mix between our bodly rythm and our brain waves and "sounds". Just try listening to Goa or Psytrance under the effects of LSD and you shall see. Personally, my brain divides the beat and the tweaks in the background, and then my body reacts to the drum rythm and my brain hears the tweaks. And it's incredible how all those weird and bubbling sounds suddenly seem like the "sound" that my brain does when it works. Intense, fast, odd, and in patterns. They seem so familiar. Like an approach to my brainwaves. Long live Goa and Psytrance!

"Have you any idea why some people visualize and others don't?" -- Aldous Huxley I use this music, in combination with moderate doses of acid, as a tool. The synergy it creates in my mind facilitates the process of visualizing fantastically; imagine - being so incredibly *alive* - life, at a hundred thoughts per second. The effect is not hallucinatory; it is completely real... I have used this tool quite successfully, to accomplish real objectives - in the field of electronics, for instance, I have employed this technique to design solar power systems for scientists working in the Arctic; innovative electric motor control circuits; unusual types of custom switchmode power supply designs... as well as envisioning glimpses of the future of computer hardware design, such as an extremely high-bandwidth form of optical coupling for parallel processing, as well as a different type of integrated processor + memory form of architecture. In other fields, I have also designed a house... solar-powered air conditioning... electric bicycles... In short, the possibilities are endless. These tools are completely invaluable; I am very thankful to have had the good fortune to live in a period where such are available. The only thing that really puzzles me though, is why so very few others have also seen these possibilities - and employed these tools in similar fashion. I used to go to raves (some were really great!), get into a suitable mindstate, and be totally blissed, immersed in the realm of design - but all others seemed to see was some old fart in a lab smock, wandering aimlessly and grinning idiotically... they never Knew. And for those few who did ask, I would *try* to share... but alas; it never really went across. Hence the above quotation. Doc Atomic

I think...last year in GOA, over dec/jan i had the best times of my life....The parties, the Music, the people and the drugs.......and then theres the added bonus of the amazing beaches, the cheap beer, the cheap accomodation, and not having to worry about FUCK all other than when u should eat, and what drugs should u buy from the chemist in Vagator....liquid or pills???? Man what a life u can have in GOA......But i think Goa will die, well the party side anyway....it was happening last year, hundreds of people waiting on CHAI-mats for partys that never started, coz the Backsheesh wasn't paid......but the parties that did happen, and there was loads were fuckin' ace!!!! But maybe that was due to HOFMAN???? But how can u beat a party that is on a cliff overlooking the sea, that goes on till the sun has risen, quite abit after it has risen, and then u all just hike down to spaghetti beach and chill???? I wish i was back out in Goa this Christmas, but the 4 months i spent travelling around the rest(well some of it) of INDIA put me in a little bit of debt!!!....but i will return to GOA to experience that thing they call TRANCE......But maybe by next year it will of moved South, down to Kerala, probably to a place i spent 3 weeks at called VARKALA, coz when we left GOA, thats where the next FULL-MOON party(end of JAN) happened, and it was right on the Beach, just how i imagined them to be...... I love Psy-Trance. It's one of the only forms of music that takes me on a journey of lush soundscapes and colors. This music should be your drug. Your dealer is your local record shop owner. If you can't enjoy and appreciate the music without the help of chemicals, then don't listen to it. The rave scene in the U.S. fucking sucks because of idiotic drugged kids (who most of the time aren't even going for the music) sitting down at parties. Some of them don't even know the difference between Trance and Jungle. And now you want to trash a city? Raves are not crack houses, do that shit somewhere else. Come correct or don't come at all.

does ANYBODY know this damn song? I heard it at a rave in south africa 5 years ago,its trance and the chorus goes like this 'take me higher to another place, take me away from the human race...take me higher,to another place, take me away to another dimension' etc if you know the song PLEASE contact me i turned to every possibility to find this song and still no luck. By the way Goa rocks,so does jungle, trance, psychedelic trance and drum and bass-RAVE ON people!!its the sickest wickedest scene out there and we should exploit this liberating music and experience the vibes.I've been to India and i plan to go back really soon and better experience their culture to reach further enlightenment.haha seriously music keeps me sane and drugs are fascinating -don't make false assessments by saying most kids in the US only rave to take drugs. Its a major assumption and degrading to the whole raving community in this continent.True, some morons solely go to trip and don't know shit about the music but why should it bother any of you?SO if that's the experience they seek then that's the only one they will find,it's a shame that they can't appreciate the music but it's their own loss,it shouldn't bug any of you so stop being such stuck up,music critiquing, knowitall assholes coz you started out not knowing anything either and perhaps you should give those slightly stupid kids a chance to change and gain undertanding over time. ...now help me find this song!!!!!thanks so much,RK,Canada.

Trance is great-Goa is fucked! someone needs to build a better base for our parties cos we are sick of being mugged/robbed and ripped off by the locals. It used to be good but now we don't gamble with our safety anymore. If you are planning on going to GOA then watch your back and open your eyes, you will hear countless stories of abused visitors and police setups. Not everyone is innocent of course but if you get setup, watch your back because embassies cannot do jack shit to protect you if you are accused of possession.A lot of what is written above is absolutely true.If you doubt it then you are foolish,if you've been there and had no problems you are lucky. They want the trance parties gone so they can fill up those cheesy package tourist hotels so don't expect anything but contempt from the locals.THEY DON'T WANT YOU THERE BECAUSE PACKAGE TOURISTS SUPPOSEDLY BRING MORE MONEY IN.

First of all, I don't understand why you have to enjoy goa music IN Goa!?!? I mean seriously, if all of this apparent shit is going down there, then what is the point? It is all about the music after all. And, all of you act as though the drugs don't enhance the music, THEY DO. So, you may say that goa-trance is perfectly fine by itself(oh and trust me, I do agree), but that only leads me to believe you have never listened to it while under the influence of MDMA. The combination of MDMA and trance is INSANE!! You are the music, the music is you! Your emotions rise and fall along with the beat, your heart races during "chase" beats, and it just makes you...happier than you will ever be in your life! It's out of this world, and it is only good! However, without the use of drugs, I enjoy trance VERY much. The drugs do not make the music good, they only add to the affects of it. However, it was only after my first experience with MDMA and trance that I truly felt the music. To this day the music literally controls my emotions, whether I am on a drug or not. Their is no way to describe the beauty of trance music. LONG LIVE TRANCE!!!!!!! (oh yes, and if you wish to email me, please make the subject: goa-trance)

I honestly have never heard of Goa...damn, whats wrong with me!!?! But HELL YEAH TO TRANCE!! Although I saw trance referred to as "trendy" I will only ignore that. Anything can be trendy, obviously Goa is trendy, since so many people are flocking there, but trendy does not necessarily make it bad :) Trance is HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY music, and accompanied with MDMA can only get better! NOT that I don't appreciate the music without the use of drugs(because i sure as hell do!!). But please, everyone, don't knock us drug users if you haven't tried it. Drugs(especially MDMA/acid) do not take away from the qaulity of the music, they only enhance the music! Keep that in mind, and leave us in peace! Besides, we should all be united in our passion for the music, not the hate for the "newcomers" to it, or the drugs involved with it. Often I find many of the Trance cd's are directed towards MDMA users, as well as other types of drug users. So let us enjoy the music as we'd like, and as many of us first came to know trance music. LONG LIVE TRANCE!!! (If by chance you email me make the subject : I LOVE TRANCE)

I think... If you start to or want to listen to GOA first try Astral Projection and if you want to know what it is ? Just experience it and let the names of the records speak for itself! I want to thank Astral Projection personally for making the world better for alot of people! Astral Projection is the best band, They are the REAL GOA band! I also make music, and for the most part I play the guitar, but occasionally I also try to make GOA, this is harder then some people think! You have to have a vibrating soul for that! About the drugs, that's true, you don't need drugs when you are listening to GOA, the music takes you where ever you want to go.... AumSativa.
