Circadian Rhythms is a meditation on the passage of time and an exercise in musical archeology. Mixing live on four decks, DJ Basilisk skillfully blends some of the finest mid-tempo Goa trance classics of the 1990s with dub techno, tribal trance, progressive house, psybreaks, and psychedelic dub. Holding steady at or around 120 beats per minute, the deep frequencies of this mix evoke the heartbeat of creation, taking the listener on a full journey through day into night and back again. Microcosm was an old school Goa trance project formed by Norwegian musicians Fredrik Larsen and Georg Simonsen in the late 1990s. Their debut album, Higher Levels, was never meant to be released, but thanks to the efforts of a close friend, it is now possible to experience the wondrous majesty of these lost classics. Microcosm’s sound embraces the original conception of “full-on”, combining layered melodies, acid-drenched, cosmic atmospheres, and peak-time energy. Behind the music, there is also a cautionary tale of dreams, obsession, and excess, all in the pursuit of accessing the higher levels of trance for which this album is named. Engineered by Karlsen and mastered by Jay (Southwild) @ Trailer Park Studios, Toronto.

This set was recorded live at Re:Generate, the name chosen by the Om Reunion Project to set the mood for their summer solstice gathering in 2011. I was scheduled to play on Sunday morning at the Moon Bass stage, a great little setup in a forest clearing on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Ontario. It felt like the right space and time to take a trip into the history of the psychedelic trance subculture so I mixed up a diverse assortment of old school Goa trance classics after sunrise. As always, this set was completely improvised; absolutely nothing was planned prior to stepping on stage to ready my equipment. This musical experience was co-created with a fantastic crowd of people who emerged from the woods to dance with enthusiasm to these old school gems. Quick cover artwork by Basilisk using a photograph of geometric designs by Cosmo Guffa.

Extra Celestial Transmission: The Remasters is the definitive collection of classic tracks by London-based producer ECT (Leigh Griffiths), written between 1997 and 1998 and originally intended to be released as his full-length debut album. Instead, the tunes, including several cult favourite “Pigmies” collaborations with über-producer Mass (Afro-Celt Soundsystem/Imagined Village/Edgecore), ended up scattered across various compilations on different labels. Even so, ECT’s unusually twisted and chaotic brand of dirty psychedelia made a lasting impression on the scene, influencing (or alienating) many psytrance producers of the new millennium. Now, having applied an “everything on 11″ coat of digital polish (to what were already pretty sonically overloaded tunes), ECT is pleased to share/inflict this “lost album” on a new generation of trance listeners. Prepare yourself for an unruly onslaught of liquid metal leads, filthy breakbeats, upsetting bass lines, frenzied atmospheres, children’s toys, William Burroughs, and Lady Penelope out of Thunderbirds, as Mr. Jolly rides again. Exterminate all rational thought. All tracks remastered in 2011. Cover by planXdesign.

Etnoscope is a legendary Swedish tribal trance project founded in the year 2000 by Martin Colin, Rasmus Alanne, and Ludvig Engelbert. Their debut album Drums From The Dawn Of Time was originally released on Digital Structures in 2003 to great critical acclaim. Harnessing the universal power of the drum, one of humankind’s most ancient instrument, Etnoscope has created a timeless classic of progressive psytrance. Organic rhythms, evocative vocals, and highly stylized synth-work combine to manifest a primal trance-dance ritual that transcends the boundaries of time and space. Featuring vocals by Carola Szücs, Lotta Hedberg, and Lisbet A. Lanne as well as didgeridoo by Linus Zättervall.
