How do I download music from this site?

Visit the free music section and click on any of the green “MP3 Download,” “FLAC Download, or “WAV Download” links to begin downloading. If you have any problems try right-clicking and selecting “Save As…” (or the equivalent action on your operating system).

What do I do with the files I have downloaded?

All of our releases are packaged in ZIP or RAR archives. Once you download these files you will need to extract the contents. You should have no trouble with the ZIP format as the necessary software is native to most operating systems–but if you encounter difficulties, Google is your friend. Unless you have already installed it you may need to install software to open RAR files; try out WinRAR, 7-Zip, ExtractNow, SimplyRAR (for Mac OS X), or Unrar (for Linux-based systems).

Inside each package you will find audio files (MP3, FLAC, or WAV), cover images, info files, relevant links, and other such things. You should be able to play MP3 and WAV files without any extra effort but you may need to download software or drivers from the FLAC homepage to play FLAC files.

Is the music on this site legal to download?

Yes, absolutely! The releases featured in the free music section have been gathered from a variety of content providers, all of whom have explicitly granted permission for people to download and share their work. Many releases featured here are licensed under the Creative Commons while others are simply posted “as is” and are for promotional use only. Check the details on each individual posting. All releases are readily available for DJ use in sets and mixes but other uses (film, advertising, commercial licensing) are almost always restricted. Contact the original artists when in doubt.

How can I support Ektoplazm?

Like what we are doing? We really appreciate donations to support the cause. Hosting expenses typically add up to about $250 a month right now, and then there is the additional expense of having all official Ektoplazm releases professionally mastered. Every little bit counts!

There is more: tell your friends, email local organizers to book our acts, post links to releases you like on social networks, and come to our shows!

We also have some promotional material (banners, images, and flyers) that you are welcome to use!

How can I have my music distributed by Ektoplazm?

Read about Ektoplazm’s distribution services here.

How can I have my music released on the Ektoplazm netlabel group?

If you are interested in working with the Ektoplazm netlabel group–which includes Ektoplazm (psytrance), Drumlore (techno/progressive), and Omnitropic (downtempo/ambient)–then you should read our demo policy and contact us.

How can I have my mix featured on Ektoplazm?

We no longer have any time to listen to mixes. Sometimes we post live sets or special mixes from artists and DJs working closely with Ektoplazm but even this is somewhat rare. Maybe in the future this section will come to life again. Sorry!

How can I have my event featured on Ektoplazm?

Event listings are free for promoters hosting events in North America featuring live acts and DJs affiliated with Ektoplazm in some way (see the profiles section for examples). Simply send us the info and we’ll get it online.

If you have not booked any of our live acts or DJs then you will need to pay for your listing or purchase advertising for your event (contact us for details).

Please note that we reserve the right to refuse listings for any reason whatsoever. Ektoplazm is not a public forum; we curate the content that appears on the site. If we have not been to one of your events how do we know if you throw parties that will appeal to our large audience? Invite us out and impress us and we will gladly tell other people about what you do.

How can I get a profile on Ektoplazm?

Here on Ektoplazm we profile individuals and organizations that make a noteworthy contribution to the free music scene. We are also interested in profiling collaborators, colleagues, and friends. We are not open to profiling just anyone. Basic rule of thumb here: we will ask you, not the other way around.

How can I become affiliated with Ektoplazm?

You will be invited. It doesn’t happen any other way. We certainly aren’t going to respond to emails out of the blue from people we don’t know. (We get a lot of those!)

How can I advertise on Ektoplazm? Can we trade links?

If you already have an account with Google AdWords, simply use the Placement Tool to buy space on Ektoplazm. Contact us for rates if you wish to post an event listing or banner image outside of the AdWords program.

Link trades are generally welcome but they aren’t a huge priority. Use the contact form to drop us a note. Promotional material can be found here.

Can I play the music from this site on my radio show?

Radio play is almost certainly welcome by all. Check to see if a release has a licence attached to it; most specify that any noncommercial usage is fine as long as credit is given. Help yourself to the free releases and mixes provided on the site and let your listeners know about Ektoplazm if you like the site.

Now and then we receive requests to provide exclusive material for radio shows. Such offers are appreciated but we are far too busy to whip together a set on demand.

Can I use the music from this site in my video project?

Small-scale non-commercial projects that abide by the terms of the licence attached to a release are totally fine. If your video project is commercial then you will need to contact the original artists for authorization.

How can I get a picture next to my name in the comments?

Sign up for Gravatar using the same email address you leave comments with.
